Tarveling to Lucca in february
How is the weather in February in Tuscany. I will be attending a meeting at Il Ciocco in Lucca and I will be traveling with my 11 year old son. Is there much for him to do? Is there any skiing? How accessible is it to get to Pisa and Florence fromIl Ciocco?

In February the weather could be quite cold where Il Ciocco is. While Lucca is the most beautiful town, with plenty of things to do and to see, Il Ciocco is in a remote place, in the middle of bautiful hills but with hardly anything to do.
Skiing for beginners is available at Abetone. Once you are in Lucca than both Pisa and Florence are just over half an hour away. Close by are also the spa town of Montecatini, the town of Pistoia, and the village of Vinci, where Leonardo was born.

Buses in Lucca 2
Tip originally written in November 2004.
The suburban buses are blue single-deckers. There are nine routes, but different directions on each route are numbered differently, so there are 18 bus numbers, running from 51 to 68. The routes cover a wide area, from Balbano and Carrognano Buchignani in the west to Capannori and Lammari in the east. We were staying just outside the city walls, so didn’t use the suburban buses at all, so I can’t comment on frequency of fares. Check the website for more information on the regional and suburban buses (in Italian, but the map, routes and timetables are all there).

I have had several enquiries for more information about the buses recently, so have re-visited the websites to check on the information I gave before. I can't find a clear map of the services, although there is a small, blurry one buried on the CLAP website. The timetables can be found though. Look up in the index http://tinyurl.com/2wmsjg for where you want to go, and the timetable number, and then look in the whole timetable at http://tinyurl.com/ynk227 to find the times. The services vary during school holidays, so you need to check the dates on page 4 of the index.
Great cathedral in Lucca
I would advise photography attempts on the cathedrals and churches of Lucca, the architecture makes great contrasts with the sky, and quite simply you can take a little bit of these beautiful buildings home. Here is my attempt:

Climb the tower
One of our guidebooks stated that there was a bar on top of this tower. We braved the over 230 steps and to our dismay-no booze! The view was spectacular and the top was a bit crowded, but a great experience.
City Gates
Lucca is a walled city, and there are 6 gates through the walls that allow access to the city.
We entered Lucca though Porta San Pietro. It is used for both cars and pedestrians.
This gate was completed around 1566 and it has an image of St. Peter over the central arch. The two side arches were added in 1864.
We entered here as it was closest to the train station and is also close to Piazza Napoleone, on the inside of the walls.
