Great Base to Explore Northern Tuscany
by pigletsmom
If you want to Explore Northern Tuscany, Lucca would be a good choice to stay over night. Tons of things to do and see right in the city, but close by for several day trips to nearby towns. Tuscan scenery around Lucca is very lovely.
Wander around Lucca's narrow and cobbled streets
by micas_pt
As I mentioned previously, Lucca is somewhat a quiet destination, not over-crowded with visitors, even in peak season, as was the case of my visit (July).
Wandering around its less touristy streets is amongst my best memories of this city. It is so peaceful and quiet and you get the chance to feel how the real city is - the beautiful architecture, the decayed buildings with the flowered balconies, the clothes hanging to dry on the windows, ladies chatting at shop's door or from their windows to the passers-by.
Good cheap pizza & more...
by illudiumqh36 about Antica Drogheria
It is my favourite restaurant when I lunch in town.
It's a cute restaurant located in an old drugstore (this is what "Antica Drogheria" means). They serve many many kind of pizza... all extremely good. Ask also for a basket of "focaccia" when you wait for your orders.
In one of the rooms there is always an exibition, sometimes paintings, sometimes pictures... it depends on the moment.
You can also buy several typical food in this restaurant...Oil, Jam, Marmalade, Pizza Doc, Pizza Ubriaca, Pizza Taleggio e pere, every kind of typical starter they have (remember that in Italy a starter could be enough for a lunch)
Also cakes and chocolate are really good, but a little more expensive than the pizzas.
Torre Guinigi
by sue_stone
The Torre Guinigi is one of the 2 towers in Lucca that you can climb.
From the top you have magnificent views over the city.
We decided to climb this tower as it is pretty unique - it has trees growing on the top of it!!
There are about 230 steps to climb and it is not very difficult, as tower climbing goes.
Cost was 3.50 euros and it was well worth it for the fabulous views!
Walking the city walls
by maritagnes
The old city walls of Lucca are perfect for walking - or cycling, and the view from here is stunning.
These impressing fortification walls surrounding the town were completed in 1645. They also preserve the inner town from traffic, and it's quite easy to find a parking space outside the walls.
