Lucca
by micas_pt
Lucca is a beautiful city, apparently not visited by too many visitors, unlike other Tuscan cities such as Pisa and Florence. I am glad we choose Lucca and Siena to visit while in Tuscany instead of other cities (as we were short of time to visit them all), also beautiful but packed with visitors and long waiting queues.
As I mentioned, Lucca is a city enclosed by well-kept medieval walls, where you will find beautiful churches, lively squares and amazing architecture. Also, its people are quite friendly and helpful. Food is very good in Lucca (actually, everywhere we went in Italy , I always found food great).
Daytrip to the Cinque Terre
by HORSCHECK
Take a daytrip by train to the Cinque Terre at the Ligurian coast. The Cinque Terre consists of 5 fishing villages which are situated at the bottom of a steep rocky coastline. This unique landscape has been included on the UNESCO's World Heritage list. With its scenic footpaths, it is an ideal area for hiking excursions. For more information, please have a look at my Vernazza page.
Local food
by Helga67 about Gri Orti di Via Elisa
The owner of our bed and breakfast gave us this address. It was not too far from our b&b and a good local place to eat.
We were very satisfied. It was a nice place with good service. It seems to be a popular place because by the end of the evening it was full. They serve local food from Lucca. They are well known for rabbit dishes.
Piazza dell’ Anfiteatro 1
by alucas
This piazza is built on the site of the old Roman ampitheatre, which originally lay outside the Roman walls. Over the centuries, the ampitheatre was pillaged for stone and marble, and eventually the site was built over. The houses used the Roman basements and foundations, and so the elliptical shape survived. In 1830, the architect Lorenzo Nottolini created the current piazza by clearing all the buildings inside the arena and completing the circle with an uninterrupted line of houses.
Holy city ?
by mauro_pd
Probably not, this is not Rome with more than 700 churches within the ancient city walls ... nevertheless Lucca spots some nice and (sometimes) well hidden churches.
Going for a mission to discover each one can take you a full day ... rushing :-)))
