Accomodation

by jocre

Does somebody have a hint about a nice and not expensive hotel, agrovilla or B&B in Lucca?

Re: Accomodation

I haven't stayed in Lucca. But while you are waiting for specific recommendations, can I suggest you look at www.venere.com (which lists almost all Italian hotels) and www.booking.com

Both are reliable sites, with good mapping and honest guest reviews. Neither will take any money from you as long as you turn up for your booking. I always use venere when I go to Italy (as do many other VT-ers)..it lists apartments and b&bs as well.

I spent some nights at Rooms la Torre. It's a simple bed and breakfast. There are a couple of tips on this accomodation on VT; including mine.

If you have a car, you might enjoy Hotel Carignano. It's a couple kilometers outside of Lucca, probably walkable but narrow roads and not very safe walking. It's in the countryside, inexpensive, clean and very friendly. They also have a nice restaurant. We enjoyed the peace and quiet. If you drive up the hill behind the hotel, there is a fabulous view of Lucca from afar. Here's the contact info.

Travel Tips for Lucca

Look up !

by alucas

Like most Italian cities, when the shops are shut they are very much shut, with no clues to what lies behind the shutters.

Central Lucca is full of historic buildings, so look around you, and particularly at the upper floors, and you will find some splendid architecture.

The most beautiful mountains of the Garfagnana

by ingarfagnana

There are many trekking buffs and mountain lovers that come to Garfagnana to climb or simply to admire the peaks of our planet, especially those of the Apuan slopes.
Going from north to south, we find Mount Pisanino, surrounded by the peaks of Pizzo d'Uccello, Mount Grondilice and Mount Roccandagia. Heading further south we catch sight of the Tambura, Alto Sella, Mount Sumbra and Mount Altissimo that borders the group of the Panie and the Corchia mountains. Even further to the south is Mount Forato and the Matanna.

Palazzo Pfanner

This Palazzo is a nice place to visit. You can visit the house and garden. You will enter the palazzo through a very wide entrance hall. A pompous staircase will bring you to the first floor where you can visit some rooms.

The view from Tower Guinigi

by micas_pt

Going up the Tower Guinigi was one of my favourite activities in Lucca. The views from up there are simply breathtaking!! You have a 360º view of the city which provides you with a good idea of the architecture and geography of the city. It was one of the first things we did when we arrived in Lucca - heading for the Tower - and I'd recommend everybody else to do the same.

The Tower is somewhat touristy, so sometimes there is some "traffic" on the tiny metal stairs that one must climb on the last floors to reach the top.

There is an entrance fee of 3.50euros (July 2004) per adult, but I think that the magnificent view is worth every cent of it.
