Travel Tips for Monteriggioni

Another Pretty Walled Castle

by JJBlondie

"A painting come to life"

The weather was gorgeous, in the low 80’s, as we headed towards Monteriggioni, a small walled town about 10 km from our Villa. We had a special interest in this walled castle town because our friend Ann had painted us this beautiful little town in water colors as a wedding present and it hangs on our wall at home for us to enjoy daily.

"Old hilltop beauty"

We were not disappointed with this two street hamlet completely enclosed with a medieval wall with a small church for pilgrims, a few restaurants and gelaterias, and a walk around the wall for 1,50 Euro. We slowly wandered around, looking at shops, eating gelato, and taking pictures of this quaint town. We walked the walls to enjoy the view and laughed over the similarly odd smell of this town to Venice (what we understand to simply be OLD). Monteriggioni is one of the small hilltop towns in Tuscany that is easy to explore, beautiful to look at, and allows for some amazing pictures. You don’t need to spend more than a few hours here, but its worthy of a visit, and certainly the inexpensive gelato.

from Inferno, Divina Commedia - Dante Alighieri.

Monteriggioni is a very small, intimate town, octagonal-shaped, surrounded completely by stone walls with a watch tower at each corner.
