Monteriggioni is a beautiful gem in Siena province, not too far from San Geminiano. It's very small but really worths a visit. Take a stroll on the medioeval town walls around the village and you'll discover a breathtaking landscape.
From a distance you see a walled city with 14 towers. Renovation started in 1930 and continues to this day but it is a marvelous sight from a distance.
The church was in the midst of extensive restoration when we were there so the front was not to be photographed. I took this shot of the tower from the ramparts and you get a view of the church garden too.
Inside looking up, here is the rampart walk and two of the 14 towers along with some gardens inside the walls.
The people who live in Monteriggioni have a great deal of civic pride and this is reflected in the lovely flowers found all over town.
I must have taken a dozen photos of various doors in the town. They are all picturesque and speak volumes about the history of the town.
You walk through the main gate into Piazza Roma, the main piazza where there are many shops, the church and lots of restaurants. We chose this one and had a great time watching the activity on the piazza during our long leisurely lunch at Ristorante Il Feudo which is also a B&B right on the main square.
Lots of tourist shops and restaurants on the main square. This one was particularly fun.
I love stone walls and geraniums so this was a natural. The town was full of little gems like this. You spotted one every time you turned a corner. Charming . . .
