Pisa San Rossore station

by Hannahandben

Hi everyone

I have been reading all the fantastic tips on travelling by bus/train to the leaning tower. I wondered however, when catching the train from Pisa Centrale to Pisa San Rossore, what the destination on the departures board will say (as probably San Rossore will not be the train's ultimate destination), so what destination should I look for on the departure board? It would be great if someone can answer this question as my knowledge of Italian is pretty useless
and I want to try and make sure I have the journey/s planned as much as poss before we arrive.

The board probably will say Genova and you should check on the timetable, if the San Rossore is a stop for the specific train you want to take.

However, I wonder why you would want to do this? If you travel to Pisa Centrale you have a 3,5 km walk through the city to the leaning Tower which might be even more enjoyable, as the Piazza dei Miracoli, where the tower stands, can feel like Times Square at New Year's eve.

Hmmmn, I have to sort of agree with Daniela...getting off at Pisa San Rossore might make sense if you are coming in from Florence, since there are a few regional trains that go Florence - Pisa Centrale - Pisa San Rossore; that is, instead of getting off at Pisa Centrale, you just stay on the train to San Rossore.

But if you're not already on a through train that stops at San Rossore, I doubt that you'll want to wait to take the next train there, as they run maybe twice an hour (i.e., the trains that actually stop at San Rossore). Furthermore, since this is really a commuter train, the number of departures will vary over the day as needed by commuters (for example, you have 3 during the 6 o'clock hour, but only 1 during the 10 o'clock hour).

I have to believe that the city bus from Centrale to the Piazza dei Miracoli runs a lot more often than that...oh, yeah, I see that it runs 4-6 times an hour most of the day...

And as Daniela says, it is a nice walk...I seem to recall it being 30 or so minutes when I did it myself many years ago...maybe longer if you sightsee on the way...

Travel Tips for Pisa

We only stayed briefly, but...

We only stayed briefly, but the Leaning Tower tour was incredible. Anyone who is interested in Pisa will know that the Leaning Tower has now been stablised enough to climb again. It was a real equilibrium trip walking up the stairs on a lean. Just being able to say that I climbed the Leaning Tower of Pisa is pretty impressive (as far as I'm concerned!!). Not many people in our lifetime can say that... It was worth every minute.

Campo dei Miracoli

Campo dei Miracoli

The Pisans can justly claim their central square is one of the most beautiful in the world. Does anybody agree with these Pisans?

In my point of view, this saying must be an Italian joke...

Here's a map of the city of Pisa. (Just click on the picture to get a better view of it) You may also print it from your computer if you'd like) Most of it is from walking distance, in case you don't have the transportation available.

Climb the tower

There is a sign that only healthy people with a good condition should go on top of the leaning tower. There are guided tours up there which start every half hour and you have to book them for a special time, cause only a few visitors are allowed up there at one time. The tours cost 15 € which is quite a lot for going up a tower even if it´s slanting!!! Shoes are recommended!

Basilica of San Piero a Grado

by alemir82

According to tradition, the Basilica of San Piero a Grado was built where Saint Peter landed after coming from Antioch in the 44 AD. The present building, in tufa, dates back to the XI century, while the western side and the bell tower (partially destroyed during WW2) date back to the XII century. Inside, the church is divided into three naves with recycled columns and capitals. In the vast central nave, there are frescoes representing Scenes from the Life of Saints Peter and Paul and Popes Portraits
