Climbing the Leaning Tower of Pisa

If you decide you can't climb any further up the Tower,is there a way
of opting out and climbing back down?

You might like to read my Pisa page for a full description of the climb. You do get a "breather" on the 4th level, but to answer your question - I don't think there is a way of returning to ground level and being let out of the locked door without a guide. I think there was only 1 guide for the 30 people that are allowed in at a time.

We're both over 60 and made it and my wife is scared of heights and freaks out on things like ferris wheels and she made it without a glass of vino to calm her down.

Both because of its inclination, and its beauty, from 1173 up to the present the Tower has been the object of very special attention. During its construction efforts were made to halt the incipient inclination through the use of special construction devices; later colums and other damaged parts were substituted in more than one occasion; today, interventions are being carried out within the sub-soil in order to significantly reduce the inclination and to make sure that Tower will have a long life.

Stopping the tower from toppling over

When I was there they still hadn't worked out satisfactorily how to stop the leaning tower from falling over completely. Over the years various schemes had been tried with varying degrees of success. During my visit the tower was closed to visitors and lead weights had been put on the base to prevent it from falling over. I believe now that the problem has been resolved and once again the tower is open so visitors can climb it again.

Duomo

The Duomo in Pisa is certainly worth visiting. The building of the cathedral began in 1063. It is built in the form of a latin cross. In the early 12th century the church was elongated. The Cathedral was consecrated on September 26th, 1118, by Pope Gelasius II.
The cathedral is 100 metres long; 72 metres wide and 51.36 metres high.

Mosquito Repellent

In the summer, Pisa is so hot and hamp so a lot of mosquitos infest th city and the people!
i suggest to use or a mosquitos repellent orsomething else to keep out them!
they're annoying specially during the night. can't sleep!

San Frediano

San Frediano is situated in a small square near the Univercity of Pisa. Originally ot was founded in the 11th century by Buzzacherini Sissmondi family and renewed in the 16th and 17th centuries.
As you can see, it has simple Romanesque facade with Pisan style influence, and the bell tower which looks more like defending tower.
