A superb hotel
by hopang about Grand Hotel Duomo, Pisa
Grand Hotel Duomo is a superb four star hotel with slightly less than 100 well-furnished rooms spread over four floors. It was constructed in 1959. It is located just within a stone's throw from the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa and its historic centre.
Among its impressive and sophisticated facilities and amenities are ample meeting and conference rooms, bar, restaurant serving international cuisines, mini bar, hair dryer, laundry services, satellite television, fully air-conditioned, safe deposit boxes, heater, IDD telephone, wheelchair accessible, pets allowed, foreign currency exchange, 24 hour front desk, multi-lingual staff, garage and car park facilities, lift/elevator and car rental. Its unique qualities are of course its location near the historic centre of Pisa. The services are impeccable as the staff are multi-lingual. The elegant restaurant offers international cuisines.
Poor hotel in good location

The Grand Hotel Duomo is in a great location literally 50yards from the leaning tower and duomo in Pisa.
The location is really the main selling point for this hotel. The hotel itself is rather shabby, dated and soulless. Our room was adequately equiped but one of the main reasons we picked this hotel was air conditioning as we visited in August. On arriving we found the air-con to be not working in our room. I asked reception to send someone to look at it but she forgot. I asked again as we left to do some sight seeing but on our return found she had again forgotten. Eventually we were moved to a new room, but the air-con was only marginally better in there.
We only stayed in the Duomo for one night. For a quick visit the hotel is adequate. The location is excellent, particularly considering the lack of anything of much interest away from the tower, it may become uncomfortable for a longer stay however.
Definately NOT recommended

Arrived in Pisa at the Grand Hotel Duomo and our stay was anything but grand. Our room was very disappointing and the only 4* thing about it was the fact that it had a mini bar(which was not cold and had no bottle opener therefore useless) The bed felt like it was going to collaspe, the wardrobe consisted of a rail in an alcove and the decor was shabby and far from tasteful. The room was very stuffy and warm and the shutters would not open therefore we could not cool it down. We requsted another room which was not a problem. The 2nd room appeared to be slightly better, the heating was still a problem but the shutters did open this time but with a nice view of a brick wall and the smell from the kitchens. As it was only one night decided to stay in this room and moved our baggage. On entering the bathroom we discovered it was fully equiped for the disabled with a high toilet etc and a fully open shower, which would of been great had we been disabled. The only good thing about this hotel was the location which was perfect for the sights of Pisa but 4* it definately is not, more like a shabby, 2*
Friendly hotel, very well situated.

Having read very bad reviews of this hotel after we had booked to stay, we were mightily impressed from the moment we walked through the doors. Our bedroom was large, clean and comfortable; the view from our window was stunning and the staff were friendly and helpful. It had everything we needed for a short stay. However, it was generally in need of refurbishment. I would stay there again.
