Unless you are prepared to take an organised tour or hire a car and driver, or drive yourselves (none of which are 'cheapest' by any means) then just go by train. Italian trains are safe, comfortable and very reasonably-priced. Ticket machines are easy to use and have English language options.

You can find train times, details and fares in English here:

http://trenitalia.it/homepage_en.html

Livorno>Pisa takes less than 20 minutes, one-way fare from 1.90 euro. Pisa>Lucc takes less than 30 minutes, one-way fare 2.40 euro.

Trains are frequent, but allow plenty of time for your return: ships don't wait!

From Pisa Centrale station you can walk (around 20 minutes) to the Campo dei Miracoli or take the bus. Bus routes and info here;

http://www.cpt.pisa.it/orari/urbano.htm

'Mappa' will show you the routes....the LAM Rossa is probably easiest.

Lucca station is just across the road from the city walls.....maybe 5 minutes walk to get inside them.

You can walk or take a bus or taxi from the cruise dock to Livorno Centrale.

I actually only stopped by one...

by daarth

I actually only stopped by one day. That doesn't quallify me as a guide, so I'll leave that to others. I had allways heard of this tower, so I HAD to see it. Som other time I hope to go back as I know Pisa has lots of things to offer. Just going there.

Law of gravity

by Sharrie

Think about the law of gravity. It has been speculated that since this building defy gravity, it has to be where scientist Galileo had experimented with the law of gravity & established his famous law of physics.

Galileo was born in Pisa in 1564 & the Leaning Tower would have offered an ideal setting for his experiments with gravity whereby the dropping of objects from the top in order to demonstrate that the speed of their acceleration would be the same regardless of weight!

the entrance-gates of the Duomo

by globetrott

The door is made of solid Bronce and was a masterpiece not only for the ornaments but also regarding the technical possibilities of that time.

When you get there in the afternoon, the sun will shine on the door and the silhouettes will look perfect on your pics !

Lucca!

by sue_stone

Pisa is a fabulous city and there is plenty to do and see here, but if you fancy a day trip, why not head to Lucca!

Lucca is a gorgeous walled town located in the Tuscan countryside.

It is conveniently only 30 minutes by train from Pisa!
