farmhouse with wonderful food

by Bondigirl

Hello,

I plan to stay in a farmhouse in San Gimignano in mid Novermber. Can anyone recommend a farmhouse not far from the city, that has an active agricultural life? I want to see wine be made, watch olive vines grow, perhaps take cooking lessons...

Thanks,
Beth.

Olives grow on trees, not vines. The olive harvest in that area is usually around the end of October and perhaps there will still be some harvesting in November. As far as wine, the grapes should all be harvested before mid-November so you won't see harvest but perhaps you can see wine being made. It is a long process so you will see at least a part of it, even if it's looking at lovely oak barrels.

We stayed on two different farms near there and used http://www.holiday-rentals.com/ for our reservations. You can also type San Gimignano into a search engine like Google or Ask and visit the San Gimignano web site. They will list agriturismo or farm stay places. We also found one that way and it was really nice.

Good luck. Staying on a farm is a great way to see the area. It's so much nicer than staying in a city. We absolutely loved it.

Thank you both for your great suggestions (and for correcting me about the olive 'vines'.) If anyone else stayed at a place they particularly loved, I'd love to know the name.

Travel Tips for San Gimignano

Medival Marathon

by Jmill42

One of the best things to do in San Gimignano is to get lost wandering the superclean, cobblestone streets. There are so many cool alleyways, dead ends, etc. to keep you and your camera busy for hours.

a shot taken from the top over the hill.

Roofs in S. Gimignano.
A clear proof of what I was saying when I was writing about the unique sceneries you may find in Tuscany. This is not the best place in Tuscany, all this country is beautiful like here, believe me!

Climb the Torre Grossa

by Bigs

A part of the Palazzo Communale, the town hall is the climb up to the highest tower of San Gimignano, the "Torre Grossa". You shoulnd´t mind the stairs, the views from there are terrific. And it´s not so high as the sights in Siena and Florence...

On one hand you have the city from above and on the other hand you get a fantstic view over the tuscan hills around San Gimignano.

It costs 5€ all together.

Museum of Medieval Criminology

by KiNyA

Opened in 1992 and housed in a Medieval building adjoining the Torre del Diavolo, the museum is arranged according to educational criteria and consists of historical material illustrating torture in the course of ages and the deeds of the Inquisition. It includes a collection of torture instruments, both originals and reproductions, from the 17th century until today, Medieval costumes, prints and documents. The material concerning the Inquisition in particularly interesting.

Palazzo Tortoli

by MM212

One of the most elegant of San Gimignano's palaces, Palazzo Tortoli is located on Piazza della Cisterna. The palazzo dates back to the 14th century and was built in the Romanesque-Gothic style of Siena, with a stone ground floor and two toned red-brick upper floors, decorated with pointed arches and marble columns. The building is attached to the truncated Torre Mozza, which dates from the 13th century, but was incorporated into the construction of later buildings.
