Question

by HPM1984

I'm in the final stages of planning our late September trip. We are planning a day trip, leaving from Chianti in Radda to San G with an option to go on to Volterra.

Iten Option #1 is to go to San G in the morning, lunch then on to Volterra (or not & stay the day)
or
Option # 2
Go to Volterra, lunch then to San G in the afternoon leaving around 6:00 pm (Sundown at 7:20 pm)

Any thoughts?????

Re: Question

theres a good chance everything will be closed in the afternoon in san Gimignano, we got to Montalcino at 1:30 in the afternoon and everything was closing up, as it was cold and windy up there on that day we opted not to hang around for a few hours waiting for things to re-open so we missed most of it. I would imagine the shops in San g. would be the same way.

Many thanks. I think SANG first then and on to Volterra

Travel Tips for San Gimignano

The city walls

by croisbeauty

The village of San Grimignano is surrounded, even today, by the ancient walls which stretch for 2176 metres. Since 15th century the defence system was strengthened by building five cylindrical towers around the circle. The towers, which looks almost like a bastions, are very well preserved. This one is situated in a close vicinity to the Porta San Giovanni.

Church and Towers in San Giovanni

by micas_pt

While walking in San Giovanni street I’d highlight the church of San Francesco and at the end the Towers of Cugnanesi and Becci. The church of San Francesco is Romanesque style but only its façade remains nowadays.

Once you reach the end of San Giovanni street you come across the two mentioned towers united by an arch – named after the Becci Tower. This arch is an ancient entrance to the older walls. Once you cross the arch you arrive in Piazza della Cisterna (the Well Square).

La Gabbia

by Aurorae

This is the alert torture - to scare off the others and make an example. The convict was put in this metal cage to hang in the middle of the stret, until he/she literally dried off inside and became skelethons!!!

St. Augustine's church

by Helga67

From the Rocca, you will have this great view of the St. Augustine's church on the other side of town.

This gothic-style church was consecrated in the 13th century and now houses Italian art treasures.
