Self catering with Balcony

by smilingirisheyes

Can anyone recommend an apartment or small house for myself and my Girlfriend in San Gimgnano or within safe walking distance. We are going in mid June and it would be nice to have somewhere to sit outside when relaxing.

Any suggestions.

Best regards,
Smiley.

What is it that makes you want to rent a house in san gimignano in june? This place is probably one of the most overcrowded tourist spots in europe. And san gim is not that different than the other Tuscan villages. Volterra is quite nice, too, although touristy as well. So have no special recommendations on san gim, but for b&b and holiday apartments in Tuscany I would generally recommend venere.com .

What Tuscan towns would you prefer?

Baically, if you are going to the Tuscan countryside, i would recommend taking a cheper place off the beaten path (agriturismo, smaller or less charming Village) and renting a car.. You will see a lot more, even without having to drive too much.

You might want to take a look at this apartment inside the walls of San G

http://www.accommodation-sangimignano.it/santafina.htm#

My wife and I have spent 4 holidays in San G and have always enjoyed them.

Twice we stayed just outside the walls at http://www.bellavistaappartamenti.com/

Once we stayed in an apartment inside the walls which is no longer available and finally we stayed at the wonderful Hotel Belsoggiorno with private terrace

http://www.tuscany.net/belsoggiorno/

see my San G hotel tip at

While the town is very touristy during the day, just like Venice it becomes very peaceful in the evenings.

Regards,

Billy

Cheers folks. Thanks for the links Billy, I'll check them up. We want to go as the town makes quite a good base for travelling through Tuscany. The last time we stayed there we were gone in the mornings before the tour buses arrived and when we came back in the evening the town was lovely and quiet. Prices are very reasonable for evening meals due to the number of restaurants open yet if you want to go for a drink afterwards its hard to beat a good bottle of chainti by the fountain in the square.

Cheers folks and happy travelling.

Travel Tips for San Gimignano

Olive oil , wine???

by belgianchocolate

This area is know for it's delicious wine and olive oil.
There are several opportunities to taste these delicacies at the place where they were produced.

Big signs accros the road will lead you to this places.

We wanted to visit one but didn't found the place very inviting. Don't give up to soon. You wil find more likely a nice spot when it is touristic high season.

The sqares of San Gimignano

by croisbeauty

There are dozen of small charming squares in San Grimignano, some of them with cafe-bars or restaurants, some without where people just get together asking or exchanging informations regarding the sights and directions. Since small place, you'll probably see the same face again when strolling around.

Wine and Cheese

by HELEN

San Gimignano is a small town that consists of a bunch of towers. It is full of little shops and restaurants. You can walk through the entire town in an hour. But don't rush, enjoy you day go into any local wine and cheese store and ask to have a taste of their local wine and cheese. There's a park in the center of town overlooking the fields of Tuscany. We bought a couple of bottles of wine and some cheese and had a little picnic in the park.

Main square

A shot of the main square in S. Gimignano.

Boy! This place is crowded with people.
This situation is clear to foresee due to the enormous amount of cars and coaches parked everywhere along the road to San Gimignano village.

Piazza della Cisterna

by MM212

Named after the water cistern in the middle, the triangular shaped Piazza della Cisterna is San Gimignano's second square. It is linked to Piazza del Duomo, the political and religious centre of town, with a narrow passageway. Historically, Piazza della Cisterna was the commercial centre of town. In fact, until today, a popular market takes place in town in this square, although the market now spills over to much of the rest of the town. Surrounding the Piazza are some of San Gimignano's towers, such as Torre del Diavolo and Torri degli Ardinghelli and other important palaces.
