The arches
by croisbeauty
The old core of the town is full of archways, corridors, passageways which make it very charming and pitoresque. The first impression that crossed my mind was, people in medieval times used to live a kind of social life we miss today. The community and the common life meant something to them.

The Zürgelbaum,a huge tree!
by egonwegh
We came across this tree in a quiet part of the town of San Gimignano. A huge tree about 150 years old, and its circumference is about 4.80 meters. A must see! We later found that the Italians call it a 'bagolaro', but at the time we only happened to remember and write down the German name "Zürgelbaum" - so that is how we kept referring to it afterwards. Hey look, it's the Zürgelbaum! ... In English, this tree is called a hackberry (Latin: Celtis occidentalis).

by Helga67
The church dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption was built in the 12th century. The church originally overlooked Montestaffoli but was then turned around, with the creation of a new façade and stairways on Piazza del Duomo. The Romanesque building has three naves and its walls guard numerous art treasures.

by Cristian_Uluru
On the left side of the Collegiata there is the interesting Museum of Holy Arts of the Collegiata. It was settled in 1930 to recover objects and paintings which came from the Coleggiata and the others churches of the town. In the museum you can see interesting paintings made by the Brothers Memmi and works of the 14th century.
