IN THE HEART OF TUSCANY

"Monteriggioni"

Monteriggioni che di torri si corona....." from Inferno, Divina Commedia - Dante Alighieri.
Monteriggioni is a very small, intimate town, octagonal-shaped, surrounded completely by stone walls with a watch tower at each corner.

"Sant' Antimo"

The abbey of Sant'Antimo was erected in a valley between the hills of Castellari and D'Arna near the inhabited area of Castelnuovo dell'Abate about 10 kilometers from Montalcino

"San Quirico d'Orcia"

San Quirico, is of origins, undoubtedly, Etruscan. This is testified by findings of cinerary urns and other funeral objects abd vessels, now kept in the Etruscan archeological museum in Siena.
Inside the town you must see Palazzo Chigi and the Horti Leonini, an enormous garden opens into a wide perspective flight, the effect of which is helped by the perfectly geometrical beds of box.

Pisa airport to San Gimignano

by martid

What's the best way to travel from Pisa airport to San Gimignano by public transport?

Re: Pisa airport to San Gimignano

by mccalpin

"Best" ah, such a relative term...

By train, you take a regional train from Pisa airport to Pisa Centrale, another regional train from Pisa Centrale to Empoli, then a third regional train from Empoli to Poggibonsi. From Poggibonsi, San Gimignano is a short bus ride (in fact, the sation is called "Poggibonsi-San Gimignano"). The trip will be 1.5 to 2 hours, even including the layovers. The fare for a second class seat all the way is 5.40 euro.

Look at www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html for more info and times.

Hmmmn, I can't find a direct bus from Pisa to San Gimignano at the moment (even using SITA), but at least you have a back-up plan by train...

The bus timetable you are looking for can be found at the following site along
with a timetable for the bus from San Gimignano to Siena, which is well worth a
day trip.

Travel Tips for San Gimignano

Duomo

by KiNyA

The Duomo or Collegiate Church, was consecrated in 1148 and is adorned with valuable Sienese School frescoes: "The Old and the New Testament" (Bartolo di Fredi and the "Bottega dei Memmi" or Barna da Siena); "The Last Judgement" (Taddeo di Bartolo) works of art by the Florentine school: "Stories of St. Fina" (Ghirlandaio), "St. Sebastiano" (Benozzo Gozzoli), wooden statues (Jacopo della Quercia) and the Sculptures (Giuliano and Benedetto da Maiano). Frescoes, statues and sculptures make the Collegiate Church of San Gimignano a very prestigious museum.

Collegiata (Cathedral)

by sue_stone

The Collegiata (Cathedral) is the main church in town and it is located on Piazza del Duomo. (It is not officially a cathedral these days as it no longer has a bishop, though it is still called a cathedral everywhere you read).

The Romanesque cathedral was consecrated in the 12th century, though the façade you see today dates from the 13th century. The outside is very plain, but inside is another story. The interior is covered with impressive 14th century frescoes, which cover the walls, telling stories of days gone by.

The Collegiata is actually one of Tuscany's most decorated churches, and is therefore well worth the admission fee (3.50 euro in Sep 2006).

Church of Sant'Agostino

by Willettsworld

This church was first started in 1280 and consecrated in 1298. It has a simple facade that contrasts markedly with the heavily decorated Rococo interior from the mid 18th century. Above the main altar is the "Coronation of the Virgin" by Piero del Pollaiuolo, dating from 1483.
