towers, lanes, palaces...

San Gimignano is a small walled medieval Tuscanian town famous for its beautiful buildings, cobbled streets, and particularly for its towers. Only 14 remain today, but in the 13th century they were 72. via San Giovanni, a lane with many craft shops - great shopping there, and via San Matteo, a lane full of houses with towers and palaces: really scenic.
Volterra
by sue_stone
Volterra is perched high on a sheer, rocky plateau, proudly overlooking the lovely Tuscan landscape below. It is an ancient centre, famous for its Etruscan and Roman past, and filled with museums offering a glimpse of days gone by. The town is also famous for its alabaster, which is mined nearby.
It is located 30km west of San Gimignano and makes an easy day trip. We really enjoyed our visit to Volterra. It was less 'touristy' than San Gimignano, and just had a peaceful feel about it. A great place to relax and watch that beautiful Tuscan sunset.

Piazza della Cisterna
by sandysmith
Piazza della Cisterna or the Cistern Square is the hub of the old town. Its not really a square - more of a triangle. At its centre is the well built in 1237 and enlarged in1346.
If you want to see local colour than come on a Thursday when its market day and the square is taken over by the stalls. If you want to enjoy in quieter times then avoid market day!
Museo Archeologico
by gigina
San Gimignano also has a Museo Archeologico (€3.50 admission charge, or €7.50 combined with the town's other museums), where the town's archaeological collection is displayed. Exhibits date from the Bronze Age onwards, and include Etruscan artefacts, funerary urns, and glassware and ceramics from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The museum is open daily between April and the beginning of January, and the entrance ticket includes admittance to the modern art gallery (Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea) on the floor above, which exhibits works from the nineteenth century to the present day.
Piazza del Duomo

Piazza del Duomo is a square of exceptional beauty and full of valuable historic buildings. The monumental Palazzo della Podesta with Torre Rognosa stands stands right opposite to the cathedral, ex-oratorio di San Giovanni with "The Annunciation", the Renaissance masterpiece painted by Domenico Ghirlandaio, the remains of the ancient work from the Atelier of Lippo and Federico Memmi, and the Twin Towers closing the right side of the square.
