When you love towers, this sure is the place to be. Also the landscape surrounding this walled town is breathtaking. You can see it very well, especially from one of the towers, because this small town is build on a hilltop.
The history of San Gimignano
by sim1
You already have seen that San Gimignano is a very old town, but how old is it exactly? It all started off with being a small Etruscan village around 200-300 BC. In the 10th century San Gimignano started its life as a town. San Gimignano got its name at that time. It was named after the Holy Bishop of Modena, St. Gimignano, who is said to have saved the village from the barbarian hordes. The town was located at the “Via Francigena”, a trading and pilgrim’s route. This made it possible for San Gimignano to increase in wealth and developed greatly during the Middle Ages. In 1348 San Gimignano's was struck by the Plague, which resulted in a drastic reduction of its population. From there on it went downwards with San Gimignano, loosing its importance. But now San Gimignano is restored and it gives a unique opportunity to have a look into its past. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this little town and I am really happy that it is still here.
Question: Where can I get my morning cafe?
by satara about Answer: Bar "La Cisterna"
A good place for your morning cafe and some sweet cakes to give yourself enough of sugar for the whole day. You are going to explore the town and maybe some other places around? You need sugar!:) Just sitting and enjoying my cappucino while watching the world (International world I must say) goes by..:)
Via San Giovanni
by Cristian_Uluru
Via San Giovanni is the main road of the town and it is part of the old street called Via Francigena which connected Rome to Europe. Along the street you can see very interesting houses, towers and house-towers and churches which remember the original Medieval setting of the town.

Another pic taken in that garden I told you before.
The tower is the tall one you can see from far away.
Driving towards San Gimignano is a nice experience through the valleys and countryside, and the vilalge itself is clearly visible from the distance
