Yes.

Get the train from Pisa to Poggibonsi, then take the bus up to San Gim.

Train times and fares in English here:

http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html

Takes about 1h 20m, with a change.

Bus timetable linked here:

http://www.sangimignano.net/tourist-informations/bus-timetable.php

First bus leaves Poggibonsi at 0655...but I doubt you'll want to get a train at 5am. :-)

Actually, J, Nathalie is going the other way, from San Gimignano to Pisa early in the morning.

Nathalie, when you look at the bus link that J gave you, you'll want to click on "From San Gimignano to Siena" - this appears to be the more frequent line to the Poggibonsi train station.

Note that the train station is listed on the bus schedule as "Poggibonsi FF.SS." since "FF.SS." stands for "Ferrovie dello Stato" or national railways. Since Poggibonsi is 10 kilometers by road from San Gimignano, be prepared for a bus trip that may take up to 25 minutes. I would expect, however, that the bus schedule is aligned to the train schedule; you can check for yourself.

Also note that the bus schedules include winter (inverno) and summer (estivo) times as well as weekdays (Mon-Sat, the symbol of the hammer and pick at the top of the column) and Sundays/holidays (the cross at the top of the column). So use this schedule as a guide, but double check at the place you are staying to make sure that you catch the right bus.

If you were leaving tomorrow, it looks like you;d catch the 6:00 a.m. bus from San Gimignano, arrive at the Poggibonsi train station at 06:25, then catch the regional train that departs at 06:49 which arrives in Pisa at 08:06 (with a change in Empoli). On Sundays, it looks like it will be later, since there are fewer buses (and possible fewer trains). Does this give you an idea?

Sorry, misread the question.

And yes, the bus times do seemed to fit with the train times.

Travel Tips for San Gimignano

My favourite Tuscan town

by Helga67

This was definitely my favourite town in Tuscany. It's a very attractive town full of towers, and surrounded by a city wall. No cars are allowed inside the city wall which makes it very nice to stroll along the cobbled narrow streets. The only thing that I didn't like about this town, it is very crowded by tourists. Never saw that many tourists in the other towns we've visited.

The Wine - VERNACCIA di SAN GIMIGNANO

by Aurorae

"The vines of the wellknov VERNACCIA di SAN GIMIGNANO, have been mentioned for centuries throughout various official and scientific documents, literature etc. Its well merited fame derives from its quality and appraisable characteristics.
It seems as if the vines of the VERNACCIA di SAN GIMIGNANO were first introduced into the region of San Gimignano by a certain Vieri De' Bardi around the year 1200. It was later on, that his ancestors Zanobi and Angiolo Bardi developed the cultivation of the vines that were destined to become famously appreciated.
It is certain that in the year 1276 VERNACCIA di San Gimignano's trade was flourishing. Infact, we find in the official documents "Ordinamenti della Gabella" dated 1276, that a duty tax of "3 coins" was established for each sum of VERNACCIA sent outside San Gimignano's jurisdiction. We also find a registration of superintendents, for the finer VERNACCIA wines. They were employed by the city district to control the wine trade. Therefore, it is quite evident that, already in this period, VERNACCIA has acquired notable prestige throughout the Tuscan and Italian market place. It also gladden the tables of the noble and rich. Dante Alighieri himself, while wondering among the gluttons of his Purgatory, happens upon Foreste Donati. He indicates to Dante an old man (Pope Martino IV) who is paying the price for having stuffed himself with eels alla VERNACCIA…. "Questi e, mostrò col dito, è Bonagiunta. Bonagiunta da Lucca: e quella faccia di là da lui più che l'altra trapunta ebbe la Santa Chiesa e le sue braccia: dal Torso fù, e purga per digiuno l'anguille di Bolsena e la VERNACCIA" (Purg. XXIV, 19-24)."

Gate of San Giovanni

by micas_pt

Being enclosed on medieval walls, one of the main entrances to the village is the Gate of San Giovanni, which leads visitors into the street with the same name.

This entrance door was built in 1262 and it is and has always been one of the main doors of San Gimignano – the San Giovanni street was very used by visitors in the Dark Ages and it has some beautiful (and well kept) mansions along it. Nowadays, this street has plenty of offer concerning shops for the visitors.

Cugnanesi Tower

by Helga67

The Via San Giovanni opens onto a small square overlooked by the Cugnanesi tower. In the 13th century, this tower was used as a watch tower.

Walk through the Becci and Cugnanesi arches to enter the Piazza della Cisterna.

Palazzo del Popolo

by Helga67

On the right hand side of Piazza del Duomo stands the Town Hall, which was built in the 13th century. The tower next to the town hall is the Torre Grossa, and measures 54 m. This is the highest and only tower in San Gimignano that you can climb.
