san gimignano is not good for ceramics, it's just a rip off for tourists
Piazza della Cisterna is a beautiful square with a well from the 13th century. Next to the Piazza della Cisterna is the Piazza del Duamo. These two squares form the heart of San Gimignano. At these two square you can find the most important buildings of the old city.
Santa Lucia is beautiful medieval monastery complex situated in the close vicinity of San Grimignano. It is one of the best position for taking a panoramic picture of entire village with all its towers. There is a local road to Santa Lucia immediate from the main parking place outside the village.
This square is not really a square, it's triangle in shape and is named after cistern located in the middle of the square. It was originally built in 1237 and later enlarged in 1346. The cistern was an important water source for the town & now popular attraction with visitors
From the square, you can see other medieval buildings plus a hotel & a cafe
San Gimignano's old Rocca (fortress) sits west of Piazza del Duomo. Its construction was completed in the mid 14th century, and it was built on the existing town walls. In the 16th century most of the fortress was dismantled.
All that remains these days is the crumbling shell, which has a lovely grassy inner courtyard filled with olive trees and shady places for families to picnic. Also remaining is one small tower. You can climb to the top and enjoy the lovely views across the valley.
When you take a wander in the gardens you may also be lucky and be able to check out some art that is displayed (and is for sale) by local artists.
The Palazzo del Podestà was built in 1239 and the facade was finished in 1337. The building is characterized by a great arch called La Loggia which was the entrance to the granary during the Middle Ages. The Palace has got a tower called La Rognosa which is 52 meters tall and it is the highest tower of the town (wasn't allowed to build a tower higher than this).
Inside the palace was built a theatre in 1794.
On the right side of the palace there is the Torre Chigi built in 1280.
