Waffle cotton towels

by earlenecomins

When in San Gm a couple of years ago I bought some beautiful waffle cotton towels. Since I have been unable to find any in NZ I wonder if anyone can help with the name and address or website of a shop there which sells this kind of linen. Some of the towels had monogrammes and none of the several I brought back has a manufacturer label on them. These were Italian made and great quality. I would appreciate some help.

Travel Tips for San Gimignano

Town walls

by Jmill42

A very cool fact is that you can walk around the original city walls. They were erected in the year 1251. There were two main gates, the San Giovanni and San Matteo. There are a few other gates, as well: the Delle Fonti, Quercecchio and S.Jacopo
All of the stone came from the nearby quarry of Pecille.

Town of towers

by Helga67

As of the 13th century homes of nobles were built in the town centre, flanked by towers as a symbol of their power. It is said that at the height of the town's glory, there were 72 towers present. Today, there are only 14 left.

Go to the top

San Gim for me was all about the views. Obviously the best place to get a view is right on top, the highest point of the hill (if one doesn't count the towers). There's a garden up there, small and neat - one can get there walking west from the Piazza del Duomo.

The view, especially in the slanting sun of late afternoon, is captivating. Made me want to stay on for a week or three and just dally in the vineyards, but alas, I had to return to the real world.

Nooks and crannies

by Jmill42

While in the castle, take the time to explore all of the little coves and hidden places within the castle walls. Some spectacular picture opportunities can be found. Concerts are sometimes held in the main area, so be on the lookout for fliers around the city.

Piazza della Cisterna

by Jmill42

One of the main attractions of the city, the Cisterna, or water well, is a great place to have dinner or to stroll about. There are numerous coffee shops and restaurants, along with various shopping stores located here. Just off the piazza is the Torture museum. The well itself is an octogan-shaped well, that was first used in the 13th century. Thankfully, they have bottled water now...
