Language school hunt

by alienortaylor

Does anyone know of a good language school in the Gimignano area? And somewhere good and cheap to stay for 5 weeks?

Hi,
try these two websites:

or:

or:

I am going to the Dante Alighieri school in Castelraimondo for the month of August. I chose that village specifically because it was off the beaten path and few of the villagers will likely speak english, so I'll be forced to converse in Italian. Their website is www.scuoladantealighieri.org.
I love San Gimi so I understand your desire to go there to school...

Travel Tips for San Gimignano

View from the Torre Grossa

by sim1

When you are in San Gimignano you have to climb the Torre Grossa (Great Tower). The tower is 54 meters high and I think it is the only tower you can climb up in San Gimignano. In 1996 I had to pay 8000 lires to go up the tower, but I have no clue how much it is nowadays.
The views from here are spectacular though, so I think it is worth the money. You have a fantastic view over San Gimignano and the surrounding landscape.

Top 5?

by cpiers47 about Gelateria della Piazza

An Italian friend who has traveled extensively listed this gelateria among his top 5 in the country. So, we piled in around 9:30 in the morning for a "breakfast" of gelato. The owner, Sergio, is friendly and welcoming and we loved the selection. Some tried the more adventurous flavors like saffron while others of us opted for the fruit.

The Rocca

by gigina

The Rocca, a ruined fortress on the highest part of the hill, is surrounded by green parks and olive groves where you can sit and admire the Tuscan panorama, while munching on a cheese roll made up in one of the town's many shops. Alongside the Rocca is a charming little terrace where civilised foreigners sit sipping wine outside the Museo del Vino. This Museum of Wine is small, and of limited interest if you don't understand Italian, but the adjacent shop/bar, where you can discuss and buy bottles of local vintages, or enjoy wine by the glass, is an ideal stop on a sightseeing tour. The local wine is a white called Vernaccia di San Gimignano, and was a popular choice in Renaissance Florence.

Via San Matteo

by micas_pt

After visiting the Cathedral and the Piazza del Duomo you may head for another street which is on the visitors’ route due to its medieval buildings – Via San Matteo. This street “begins” in the square by the Palazzo del Podestá.

On this street, apart from inumerous tourist shops you may observe some nice medieval buildings and towers such as the twin towers Salvucci and Pettini.

la Loggia del Comune

by MM212

The arched Loggia del Comune is adjacent to Palazzo Comunale on Piazza del Duomo, the heart of San Gimignano. The loggia was built in 1338 and it is where public ceremonies were held. Within the Loggia is a 16th century fresco of Madonna and the Baby (Madonna col Bambino) which was moved here in 1930 after the chapel containing it was destroyed in an urban development project. This chapel was located by Porta delle Fonti, one of the San Gimignano city gates.
