The narrow streets
Hi, Six of us are going to stay for a week in a B&B near San Gimignano, and on one of the days we'd like to go biking in the Tuscan Countryside. Does anyone have any suggestions of the routes we could ride?
I am curious - how are you getting bikes? My husband and I were thinking of renting bikes, but have no idea how to go about it, or if that is even something that is offered.

On the left hand side of the Duomo square you can see the Palazzo del Popolo (People's Palace). This is the most important monument of San Gimignano. It houses the Civic museum, but it is also rich in painting dating back to the 13th century by the Florentine and Sienese schools. Inside the Palace you can see various frescoes on the walls.
On the right hand side of the Palace you can see the Torre Grossa (Great Tower) erected in 1300.
True, this place is far away from the crowd you see at Via San Giovanni or Piazza del Duomo for example.
The place here is calm, peaceful and of course worth of seeing.

Right after Porta San Giovanni there is the ancient cobbled street of San Giovanni, the main street of San Gimignano. San Giovanni street is flanked by imposing buildings, some of which still have their tower. The street itself is a real beauty of the medieval architecture.
Piazza della Cisterna is named after the well. This well in the middle of the square was built in 1237 and enlarged in 1346. The water in the well was used for drinking, cooking and washing, but also to put out fires.
The imposing Porta San Matteo is massive stone made construction which leads steeply downwards to the Public Fountains. As all other town gates, it has very characteristic construction on its top which served to defend the soldiers who guard the entranc in the town.
