Main Square
San Gimignano's main square is very lovely in the evening with all the lights, it is nice even just to sit around and watch the people passing by. The medieval spirit adds to the charm of the place.

Anything to watch for, or any suggestions for doing a day trip from Florence to San Gimignano by bus?
To reach San Gimignano from Firenze by bus you have to take it at the Autobus Station in Florence in Via Santa Caterina da Siena in front of Santa Maria Novella Train Station and go to Poggibonsi. In Poggibonsi you'll take another bus to San Gimignano.
Here timetable and some information about San Gimignano, a lovely town in my opinion.

SITA bus has a day trip to Siena and San Gimignano which is very good. This includes an English speaking guide. Check out their web site: www.sitabus.it. Click on Turismo then Escursioni. You then get the option to view the page in English.
Their sales office is located near where you catch the regular busses, and the sight seeing busses also leave from that terminal.

There is no really of the beaten path here. The town is so little. PLease take your time to walk around. A few hundreds of secret corners are waiting for you. Little dark arches , tiny streets and alleys. Don't stay in the tourist street. You can also take the walk round the city walls...almost 7 kilometers.
Don't go with one of those busses that put you of for an houre...
The Palazzo del Popolo (people‘s palace) was built between1288 and 1323. Attached to it the 54 metres high Torre Grossa (large tower) was added. The palace and tower played a very important and strategic role for the town: it was a defense building as well as the place where the authorities summoned the citizen in order to give them information or warn them about fortcoming dangers, invasions or fires. The meeting signal was the toll of one of the bells.
Today the palace has become the Town Hall and it also hosts the Museo Civico (civic museum) and the Pinacoteca Civica (civic art gallery).
One of the hobbies of the rich families that inhabited the city back in medival times was to build massive towers as a display of their wealth. Today, 13 of the original 72 towers compose San Gimignano's "skyline." They can easily be seen from a few kilometers away, high above the surrounding landscape. It is what seperates San Gimignano from all other places.
The medieval village of San Gimignano is enclosed in walls. There used to be some older walls (by the Becci Arch and Tower, between San Giovanni street and Piazza dela Cisterna) that were destroyed by Firenze.
The walls that may be seen nowadays are more recent than those and were built in 1262, after the former were destroyed as mentioned.
