Hotel Vecchio Asilo is Amazing!
by TripAdvisor Member VR_Travellers
We spent two days at Hotel Vecchio Asilo with Guido as our host during our honeymoon to Italy. Everything about this place was excellent - clean rooms, bathrooms, amazing view of the Tuscan countryside, and wonderful breakfast. Guido's help and recommendations for places to eat were absolutely perfect - one of the restaurants he recommended had the best food that we ate during our entire trip! We will definitely have to return for longer next time we are in that area.
Perfection

This is a dream 'small boutique hotel'. Absolute perfection.
I booked on the basis of the great reviews and have to say all of the positive comments by other reviewers are spot on. Everything about Hotel Vecchio Asilo is perfect - beautifully appointed, spacious, immaculate rooms and bathrooms, lovely little garden, outstanding breakfast, amazing friendly service. Outstanding value.
Hotel Vecchio Asilo exemplifies the love and care put into it by it's owners - it shows in every aspect of the place. Guido especially (because of his great English language skills and wonderful personality) is an extraordinary host. Nothing is too much trouble for him. Apart from everything else he and his family do, he even bakes the delicious cakes he serves daily for breakfast.
The only small negative was noise (from the family's quarters) above my room (I think).
If only all small hotels were like this....
Four Star Hotel Experience with Charm

We have just completed three weeks of travel in Tuscany and northern Italy. Without a doubt Hotel Vecchio Asilo was our nicest hotel, even though we had stayed in four star hotels in the other cities. Guido was just a delight and so helpful. Our rooms were charming and so clean; lovely furniture and much ambience. The bathrooms & towels were equally wonderful. He served wine to us out in their garden and recommended a local trattoria for dinner. It was also very nice and great food. We felt it was much better than staying within the walls of San Gimignano with the crowds. It was just a short trip into the city. We certainly recommend this to anyone who is going to be in that area.
Hospitality from the Heart

A hotel that fits the Tuscan environment. Very clean rooms, perfect location, next to San Gimignano and equidistant from Florence anf Siena. But what really distinguishes this hotel from any other one is Guido. The guy is a superb host, preparing a good breakfast and always available to brief you with the best restaurants, shortest routes and free parking in which ever city you will be visiting that day. We certainly reccomend the Vecchio Asilo.

What a gem!

Vecchio Asilo ([----]) is a quaint little hotel 6 km north of San Gimignano. Technically it is in a town called Ulignano. It was listed
as only one star on venere.com but had excellent reviews, and rightly
so. We booked it through venere.com for 81 EU including breakfast. From the way the bill was written, it looked like you may be able to forgo breakfast however, this was one of the best we had.
The hotel is at the edge of the town of Ulignano overlooking gorgeous
Tuscany farmland. We even heard a cuckoo bird from our room. We were only there one night but it would make a great base for touring the area by car. It is only a couple of minutes drive from the hustle and
bustle of San Gimignano, about 25 min to Volterra and just off SR 2 providing easy access to Siena, Florence and Pisa.
Our room was neat and spacious. The bathroom was clean. The windows even had screens! That was a first for a us in Italy. There is a small gated garden area that you can sit in out back and free parking
along the street. The room had a TV and hairdryer. When we asked if there was a phone, Quido said no but that he would be happy to call for any reservations or anything else we needed.
Quido's hospitality was outstanding. Before opening the hotel, he worked for Club Med for several years in Italy, Northern Africa and the Carribean. He's extremely knowledgeable and matches his advice to your wants/needs. When we arrived he went over a map of San G and
showed us where to park, sights to see, good photo ops and recommended several restaurants based on price and atmosphere. He then made us dinner reservations at Il Pino, his favorite, which also
ended up being one of our favorite restaurants of our trip. It is just inside the Porta San Matteo.
Breakfast is served in a little dining area on the first floor. Quido asked what time we wanted breakfast and we asked when it was available. I think he said 8-10. We told him we'd take the earliest time because we're early risers and like to get going and he offered to come down even earlier if we wanted. We didn't take him up on the offer but it was an example of how accommodating he was.
When we arrived for breakfast the next morning, Guido was decked out in a chef’s hat. He asked what we wanted to drink and when we said we didn’t drink coffee or tea he offered to make (really good) hot chocolate, whipped and everything. He’s the man! Next he brought hot pizza bread and a fresh fruit cup with chopped bits of fruit and then
topped that off with juice, yogurt and cake.
The ONLY negative I can say about our experience was that we could hear someone walking above us fairly late at night and early in the morning. I'm not sure if they have guest rooms upstairs or if that is the family quarters but If that woudl be a concern, you may want to see if they have rooms available upstairs.
Also note: we noticed another Ulignano on our way to nearby Volterra. That is Ulignano di Volterra NOT Uligano di San Gimignano. Vecchio Asilo is just off S.R. 2, in the middle of the triangle formed by San G, Poggibonzi and Certado.
Fantastic hotel

We booked this hotel after reading the reviews on Tripadviser and were not disappointed.
The hotel is situated in the heart of Tuscany in a quaint village, but close to all the important attractions. The rooms were spacious and beautifully appointed, each having its own en suite bathroom. The views from the shuttered windows of the rolling Tuscany countryside were outstanding.
Our host Guido went out of his way to make our stay very special and the breakfasts he served us were unforgettable. The garden was a lovely place to relax at the end of the day with a bottle of the local wine.
This was the best accommodation we had in our 5 weeks of touring through Europe. We will be going back to revisit this little piece of paradise and to stay once again with Guido and his family.
