bus travel from Siena to Rome

by morli

All the postings seem to indicate that the Sena bus route works well between Rome and Siena, but I am wondering if their schedule has recently changed. When I try to look at travel on the dates I am interested, their site says that no matches have been found. Does anyone know if this bus has been discontinued and/or if there is an alternate bus?

You are more than likely finding no info because you are looking too far in advance. The service (there are two....express (corse rapide) and not express (corse ordinaire) will most certainly not have been discontinued; it is not just for visitors, but even if it were there would be sufficient demand to run the service.

You can find the relevant info on the carrier's website here:

http://www.sitabus.it/wps/portal/DovePartire_Toscana

Click 'Linea Firenze>Siena' and you will get a pdf leaflet of timetable & info.

So you will have no problems. Just allow yourself an extra 30 minutes or so beforehand to buy the tickets at the Sita bus station in Florence: ticket office queues can sometimes be quite long.

The bus station is more or less opposite Santa Maria Novella station, slightly down a side-street (it is not the bus station which adjoins SMN station). Ask at the Tourist Info opposite the station if you aren't sure where to go.

Travel Tips for Siena

Gotta go?

by geismom

Ok, this wasn't my favorite thing, but it was important nonetheless. When you leave the parking lot, and walk to the entrance of Siena, you will find the rest rooms located near the entrance of the Basilica of San Domenico. Just look to your right, go down the stairs, and you will find what you need.
There may be a person collecting money for using the facility, but I was told that it was not required to pay. I was grateful for the clean facility, so readily available, so I gave the woman a coin!

Contrade's churches: big enough for horses

by Trekki

A contrade’s church serves as a church of course but during the Palio it has another special function. Just past lunchtime of the day of the race (between 2 and 2:30 p.m.) service is being held and the horse is being blessed by the priest. This is a very special event and yes, the horse is being brought into the church for the blessing. I found a video of the blessing of horse Fedora Saura, racing for Selva in July 2010 (and won) on youtube, see website section. It is rather unusual that visitors can watch this, for many reasons. First of all most of the churches are small and the space should be reserved for the members of the contrada of course. Second, given the very much emotional bond, Senese people have to the Palio and every part of the preparations; they might not like visitors to disturb their celebrations. But of you have the chance and maybe are invited, follow one specific rule: NO FLASH and silence.

Chiesa Santissima Anunziata 1

Chiesa Santissima Anunziata

This church is just opposite the main entrance of the Duomo,
and from outside it does not look at all like a church, so it might be easily overseen

Simply enter the door of the museum " Complesso Museale Santa Maria della Scale "
(and you will see how beautifully the duomo reflects in the glass-door of the museum

Authentic Tuscan Cooking

by annie16 about Osteria Castelvecchio

Small restaurant with delicious food. Just two people in the kitchen and one out front, but we never felt neglected or noticed any long waits. The owner didn't have a lot of English but tries hard to communicate and was delighted at our attempts at Italian.
Ate crostini, pasta with wild boar ragu, and torte alla nonna
The range of wines by the glass were particularly good The torte della Nonna ( Grandmother's Tart, that's not your grandmother is a tart, it means a tart like your grandmother would have made, O.K? )
Delicious light pastry filled with a vanilla custard and topped with toasted pine nuts

Siena's Cathedral

by Tom_Fields

Siena has one of the finest cathedrals in Tuscany, and perhaps all of Italy. Nicola Pisano and his son Giovanni designed the lower facade in the Romanesque style in the 13th century. Siena was a very wealthy city in those days, but the Black Death interrupted construction. Work continued off and on for the next two centuries, with the upper parts showing more of a Gothic style. The 19th century saw extensive restoration.
