TRANSPORTATION TO ABBEY OF SANT'ANTIMO

by Neil_L_Robertson

I am staying in Siena next week and I would like to find out if it is
possible to travel to the Abbey of Sant' Antimo without using a car.
Is it possible to get a bus from Siena to the village of Montalcino
and then walk (I have seen a reference to a sign-posted path from the
monastery to Montalcino on the Abbey Web page)
OR is a taxi the only option?
Thanyou!

Hi, Neil. I'm looking at my map of Italy and it looks like about 15 kilometers from Montalcino to the Abbey. I tried to pull up a pedestrian map on Mappy and it said it won't calculate a pedestrian map more than 15 miles in length. Therefore, it must be slightly more than 15. If you have your address in Montalcino, you could use that with Mappy and see if you can get a map. It seems a bit long for a walk unless you are a walker. You might check bus connections. That area is pretty well covered by buses.

Here's the Mappy site. http://www.mappy.com/

Here's the bus site for Tuscany. http://www.lazzi.it/itanew/activenews.asp

Good luck. We had a car and it seemed very near to Montalcino.

Neil
yeah, it is just about 10 km on the road. If there's a foot path, it may be a little shorter.

I've been doing a lot of reading about this areas as we booked a place for next weekend. Have not seen info on any buses to San Antimo. However, another option is bike, you can rent bikes in Montalcino, nice downhill to the Church/Abbey. So I read about the bike rental co. in The "Rough Guide - Italy", which I left at the office.... If you are interested in more info on this, let me know and I'll dig it up on monday.
We're bringing our bikes and hope for nice weather to explore a bit on 2 wheels.
ciao
Jon

Travel Tips for Siena

Closed for Siesta

by syllybabe

Restaurants either close after lunch or stop serving a full menu until 7pm. I remember being hungry after walking around the city and having to wait to be served real food.
On the upside though, it's really nice to sit outside the restaurants in the square on a cool day.

Libreria Piccolomini - amazing books

by globetrott

Libreria Piccolomini is full of plenty of amazing books.

Every letter in the book was drawn by hand, the 1st letter of the page was also decorated in a special way, covering almost a quarter of the page simply for the ornaments of the first letter...

To eat under the tower

by Cristian_Uluru about Trattoria La Torre

Trattoria La Torre is a small very good restaurant located over the Torre Del Mangia. Here you can taste the delicious Tuscany cousine. A must are the homemade pasta (Picci and Tortelli are great) and the Fiorentina steak (with one Fiorentina can eat two people, so ask to the waitress how big it is:-) ). And at the end as dessert you must try the Cantucci and Vin Santo: the typical Sienese sweet with one of the better Tuscany wine!! Don't forget to order the local red wine....delicious!!!!

Siena's Duomo

by Venturingnow

By far the 2nd most beautiful church I've ever seen in my life (2nd only to St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City), Siena's cathedral is a rich treasure house of Tuscany style. The Duomo was built in a gothic style, somewhere between 1200 and 1300. There is some very beautiful black-and-white banding on the campanile. The facade's upper half was added in the 14th century and is today decorated with gold-heavy, 19th-century Venetian mosaics. More information below...
