Could I go to Siena and Florence from Rapallo on a day trip by train ?

Re: Siena

by leics

It would be a long day trip.

Rapallo to Siena takes around 4 to 4+ hours.

Rapallo to Florence takes around 3.

http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

will give you train times and fares (click cart icon).

Even if you take the bus from Florence to Siena (which is a better option than the train, as Siena station is quite some distance from the historical centre) I don't think seeing both places in one day is feasible. The bus journey takes around 50 minutes. Bus timetables here:

http://www.sitabus.it/wps/portal/DovePartire_Toscana

Clikc 'Linea Firenze Siena' for a PDF timtable.

In theory yes, but not very practical. You will spend most of the time on the train.

I just "played" a little with the timetables. Leaving Rapallo 8:30am and getting 11pm will give you 2½ hours in Siena and 2½ hours in Florence.

You can read this about "Train" (the bus company in Toscana):
"Train is a joint stock company with public and private mixed capitals that manages urban and extra-urban public transport services. The main area includes the province of Siena, and furthermore TRAIN has extended its activity to other neighbouring areas of the province, such as Certaldo." on http://www.trainspa.it/en/chisiamo/costituzione.html

Or you could just get the Siena bus from the Sita bus station about 3 minutes walk from SM Novella railway station in Florence, using the timetable link I provided. No ned to book seats in advance, just buy your ticket at the ticket office in the bus station.

There's a tourist information office directly opposite SM Novella, so you'll be able to find your way easily (they have free city maps too).

Travel Tips for Siena

Piazza del Campo

by Aurorae

A unique square that is leaned on towards the municipio (town hall), in a strange shape of a fan or a sea shell, and the center point of Siena. Both during the day and night, there are many people walking by, sitting on the floor of the square, or in the cafes around.
It is a place of the famous "Palio di Siena", horseraces around the square that are held every summer.

Beaches in Tuscany

Take a car or a public bus and go discover a little more of this beautiful part of Italy. Go to a beach for example...U can see wonderful sunsets and interesting landscapes...like these trees in the picture.

Florence to Siena by Train

by smschley

By Train:
The bus is often more convenient, because Siena's train station is outside town. Some 19 trains daily connect Siena with Florence (90 min. to 2 1/4 hr.). There's also a line to Chiusi-Chianciano Terme (90 min.) passing through Asciano and Montepulciano. Siena's train station (tel. 0577/280-115) is at Piazza Fratelli Roselli, about 2 miles north of town. Take the C minibus to Piazza Gramsci in Terza di Camollia or a taxi

Palio home

by Srechko

Main shell-shaped piazza ? Piazza Del Campo - looked impressive. It is home of the Palio event (horse race) that happen here twice a year. We weren?t lucky enough to see it so I could only use my imagination when thinking of it. Piazza?s main attraction is the Duomo with its baptistery and the tower (campanile). Climbing the tower of the Duomo and possibility of enjoying a panoramic view of the city looked like an attractive activity however due to the long waiting lines and cloudy weather I gave up on that idea.

The Palio

by ForestqueenNYC

The Palio is a historical horse race which takes place on July 2 and August 16.
