Liberty style in Viareggio
"fine examples of Liberty style"
When a fire destroyed nearly all the wooden chalet beach clubs in 1917, the city authorities decided to embark upon the construction of a new city of cinemas, shops, beach clubs and hotels to cater for an international elite who would sojourn here. The Art Nouveau style that characterised this construction was known in Italy as Liberty. In Viareggio, it can be seen particularly along the Viale Regina Margherita.
The Margherita cafe, in its pseudo-oriental style, has two cupolas with green and gold scale-like ceramic tiles that were made by the famous applied artist Galileo Chini.
