Hmm not a must visit
"Viareggio - off season"
In my mind, Viareggio seemed quite attractive and worth seeing after reading about it in my guide book. I expected more from the city famous by hosting San Remo festival, and a city known as one of the favourite vacation destinations for Italians.
I was quite disappointed. City is all squares; all streets are parallel to each other which makes Viareggio quite uncharacteristic as an Italian city. You can't even get lost in there - what kind of European town is that? Buildings are grey and they all look same. Other than the small market and a few traffic-free streets in the centre, I can't recall much else worth mentioning. Viareggio has a long coast with a long sandy beach. It was not easy to find a way to the sand as it seemed to me that major part of the beach is private. Beach didn't look very clean either. Long promenade along the beach is packed with shops and restaurants with patios but it is missing that sea atmosphere as all the buildings are obstructing the sea view. You really do not have a feel you are at the sea town at all. Marina Di Pisa kicked Viareggio's ass big time.
