I recently posted a photo to my flickr photo stream of the very striking, modern-looking statue on the lawn in front of the upper level of the Basilica di San Francesco. It appears to be a knight (Crusader?) on horse back and can be seen at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kansasexplorer3128/5419856297/
I've been searching the net for further information regarding this work. Can any of my VT friends help me out? Grazie

The interior of San Francesco is known for Giotto's panels showing the life of St. Francis. However other well known artists of the day also worked on the chapel's interior. One of these is late medieval painter Simone Martini. Martini focused on the life of St. Martin. The frescos are much more gothic and primitive than Giottos. Martini uses bright colors and flat bold surfaces, and attempts at displaying dimension and perspective are not perfect, but these panels show what court life must have been like in the 14th century in Italy. Martini was very in demand during his life, and also painted for the court of Siena. These panels are truly lovely in person.
Assisi is a medieval town dedicated to St Francis and the ancient atmosphere has been preserved almost intact. Assisi represents the artistic and religious cultural revolution of the time. It is the city of Francis, who began the great reformation of the Church and also the place where Gothic art flourished as seen in the frescos of Giotto in the basilica dedicated to the saint. The Basilica of San Francesco symbolises the Franciscan order that sustains the Catholic Church.
