Small, warm, friendly . . . and good food.
by Beausoleil about Ristorante da Cecco
Well, I listed this as "local" but it is local in Italy so it is also an Italian restaurant, and a very good one. We stayed at the Hotel Berti and the da Cecco is their restaurant although a few steps up the street from the hotel.
It is small and was very busy but the service was pleasant and the food excellent. Ed got cannelloni, a stuffed rolled pasta, and I got porchetta with roasted potatoes. We split a bruschette pomodoro and all of it was excellent.
I recommend you order whatever is in season since that will be freshest.

As Hans has pointed out, it is much of a muchness whichever way you choose. Why not stop in there on your way from Florence to Rome or from Rome to Florence, whichever way you are intending to go. If I may suggest, an overnight in Assisi (especially up in the Old Town) is a wonderful experience. It is a great little place to explore after the crowds have gone away for the night. You can climb up to the castle and watch the sunset over a fabulous panorama.
I can highly recommend it.

The train journey from Florence to Assisi is absolutely beautiful, and a night in the town would give you a chance to enjoy it after the daytime hordes have left.

I agree 100%...spending the night in Assisi will be much different than nights in Rome or Florence - much closer to the feel of an Italian hilltown...well, it IS an Italian hilltown ;-)

We chose Assisi to spend our wedding anniversary this last June. We just love the town and it is much nicer in the evening after the tourist hordes have left. We stayed at Hotel Berti which is right in the city wall and a few blocks from Basilica San Francesco. They have a little restaurant a few doors up the street and it's very nice. There is also parking if you have a car. Be sure to tell them you need parking when you reserve.
