Basilica Santa Maria Angeli
by Willettsworld
Santa Maria Degli Angeli lies a few miles away from Assisi on the flat plain. It boasts this huge imposing basilica which was constructed between 1569 and 1679 and crowned by the magnificent dome designed by Alessi. Inside are the Porziuncola (the nucleus of the first Franciscan monastery and the place where St Clare received the Francican cowl from St Francis in 1211) and the Cappella del Transito where St Francis died on 3rd October 1226.
Chiesa Nuova
by Tom_Fields
The Chiesa Nuova, or New Church, was built in 1615 in the Renaissance style. It's in the shape of a Greek cross, reflecting the later influences that had come to Italy from elsewhere in the Mediterranean world. It was here, according to local legend, that St Francis' family once resided. Here, his father owned and managed a clothing store, and the young Francis helped out. Eventually, after Francis gave up the business and became a friar, his father disinherited him.
The church and monastery contain a museum with many works of art from the Renaissance and a library with manuscripts from this period.
Religion or romance, Assisi has plenty of both

"Lovely hill town with gorgeous views and history"
I can't believe I haven't created a page for Assisi. It is one of our favorite places in Italy and certainly it's not hidden from tourists so I'm not keeping it a secret. No matter how many tourists there are, it cannot hide the loveliness of the golden stone city on a hill.
We enjoy it so much that we chose it for our 44th wedding anniversary this past June. It really is a special place.
"You would never know there was an earthquake!"
Having spent 20 years in California earthquake country we were horrified when we heard on tv that there had been an earthquake in Assisi and there was terrible damage to the Basilica. We didn't get to visit for several years and when we got there, we were amazed how marvelously well they had pieced all the frescoes back together. The inside of the church is nothing short of amazing, particularly if one has seen the "before" photos.
We fell in love with Assisi on that trip and decided to revisit for our 44th anniversary last June. It was delightful since our visit coincided with the choir from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. We heard them sing during a Mass and later heard them in concert in the Basilica. It was the perfect anniversary present.
"Every street is a photo op"
You can stand in the middle of any street, aim your camera and shoot and get something picturesque. While I don't recommend that, it says much about the beauty of the town. The stone buildings are charming; the flowers are lovely and the views from every point on the very high hill are amazing.
The food is pretty good too . . . 8^)
