what is the best hotel to stay in in the center of assisi - not the countryside thank you the same question goes for siena
"best" equals "cheapest", "largest", "most comfortable", "closest to Basilica", "most stars"??? give us a hint on what is important to you...

should it be the centre of medieval Assisi, where the cathedral is and most of the accomodations are inside monasteries and maybe a few private B&B.
or the new Assisi, where discos might be and good shopping facilities and modern hotels ??
Not much to say, only that it is very gorgeous.
It is pretty amazing when you walk in and see
the magnitude and beauty of the upper chapel. I had to come back another day when all the tourists were gone and view it by myself. Even if you're not religious, this church just might get to you. Main artists are Giotto and Cimabue.
Built on a grandiose scale, the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli is the seventh largest Christian church. Its magnificence may be at odds with the simplicity preached by St Francis himself but the flocks of pilgrims coming to visit the primitive Porziuncola chapel and the Cappella del Transito called for a building that was able to accomodate the faithful.
The Porziuncola chapel was given to St Francis by the Benedictines, and is important because it was the initial nucleus from which the Franciscan order was born. The Cappella del Transito is the place where the saint died on October 4th 1226.
For us Assissi was only a lunch time stopand not enough time to wander/ We missed this church as we had seen many at that time but the feel of the town was solemn and very spiritual. We had a panini and shopped a little.
