Travel Tips for Assisi

Franciscan monks

by fairy_dust

Since this is the birthplace of St. Francis, you'll likely see some Franciscan friars walking around (look for the brown robes). You might see some nuns too. This town has a lot of religious heritage because of the saints that have lived here, and you'll see the influence of the Catholic Church everywhere you go.

Church of San Francesco - Lower Chapel

by pigletsmom

The lower chapel of the Church of San Francesco
is much darker, and more compressed. The lower chapel is made up of several more intimate smaller side chapels. You can view the paintings more closely, and are able to really examine the beauty and craftsmanship of the artsts that worked here. Giotto of course, Martini and Lorenzetti were all commissioned to work on the lower chapel. There are some panels that are in a chapel, straight ahead when you walk in. They look later, maybe 16th century, and remind me of the artist Veronese. I do not know the painter, and if anyone finds out, please e-mail me. These later paintings are also very beautiful.

Steep Streets

by Goner

You need hiking boots to walk these streets. Along these up and down streets were some interesting shops, besides pictures, plates, charms and every other form of St. Francis memorabilia, there is some beautiful paintings, tapestries and local crafts.

Assisi

by pigletsmom

Assisi is truly a lovely town. Stay away from Assisi on the weekends due to its hordes of tourists, but other than that, you'll have a pleasant time. The Church of San Francesco has one of the most beautiful interiors in all of Europe and the lower chapel is even more lovely than the upper chapel. Not to be missed by art lovers.
