We took the train around Italy last summer and thought it was great. There is a train from Rome to Assisi. Check out this link for schedules and fares. You might want to purchase your tickets in advance because the trains may be totally booked by the day of travel.

Travel Tips for Assisi

The Basilica Has Been Repaired

by Goner

The Basilica looks almost new due to the major repairs done after a devastating earthquake in 1997.

I remember seeing the people fleeing from the church on the US news, and here is what was reported:

Friday September 26 -Two Die, 20 Injured as Quake Rocks Central Italy
By Eleanor Biles
COLLECURTI, Italy (Reuter) - At least two people died and more than 20 were injured when an earthquake rocked central Italy overnight Friday, wrecking two mountain villages and causing widespread damage. A second tremor struck the region in the late morning and a Reuter correspondent in Assisi said this caused the collapse of part of the structure of the Umbrian city's famed Basilica of Saint Francis, which houses priceless frescoes by medieval painters Giotto and Cimabue.

"The Monk"

by Goner

I was fortunate to see this monk sweeping along in his robe–is it St. Francis? He did seem like only an apirition. The Franciscan order can always be identified with the simple brown robes with only a rope for a belt.

This beautiful hill town lies on the terraced slopes of Monte Subasio in central Umbria.

Its medieval art masterpieces, such as the Basilica of San Francesco and paintings by Cimabue, Pietro Lorenzetti, Simone Martini and Giotto, have made Assisi a fundamental reference point for the development of Italian and European art and architecture.
