La Palota: Good location near the main Piazza

by BBBinder

A group of 6 of us stayed here. All of our three rooms were very nice with pleasant views of the street. One couple was lucky enough to have a balcony with a view into the valley below. The breakfasts were excellent and the management friendly and helpful. Prices were reasonable too.

On the top floor they have a large common room with glass all around with specatular views of the sunset. A bottle of wine is a good idea too.

Camere Santucci: A haven for us in Assisi

by rubbersoul75

This hotel is not in the Historic area of Assisi, rather the modern section (Santa Maria Degli Angeli) down the hill. It is a couple blocks from the Basilica of Santa Maria Degli Angeli.

We were extremely happy with our stay here. Massimo, who runs the private rooms and attached restaurant was a great host.

Our room, and the others we peeked into were well appointed, modern and had seperate baths. Most importantly the rooms had A/C and were at a very reasonable price. We had a heat wave when we visited and the A/C was working overtime to keep us comfortable.
Breakfast is standard continental (coffe, brioche, some cheese and spread).

The restaurant served excelent regional cuisine and was filled with locals in the evenings (a good sign). We liked our meal so much the first night and decided to eat there the second as well. 2 excelent dinners, steps from our room. Truffles are prevelent in this area and the restaurant used them well in a number of dishes.

good host, A/C, good price, and good restaurant

Hotel Perusia & la Villa: Modern Hotel in Ancient City

by deecat

While in Perugia, we stayed in the Hotel Perusia e la Villa, which was near the historical center. It has a view on Assisi and the valley of the Tevere river.

This was the only rather new hotel we stayed in all the times we have been in Italy. It was build in the 1980's on the grounds of a well known Villa (which now houses the hotel's restaurant).

The rooms are spacious and are all alike. Best rooms in the summer months are back side rooms looking out to a park (no noise) so you can open a window because air is turned off at night. Otherwise, the country view from the front rooms is also nice.

They have a terrace as big as a track from which you see almost the entire region.

The hotel has 56 rooms, elevator, free parking and is closed (November 2-April 3.

It was clean, had great bathrooms, plenty of storage, and its restaruant next door was excellent.

I do not like really modern places, so that is a drawback.

Note: This is not my photograph; it is one from the hotel's literature.

Hotel Umbra: Convenient, Quiet Hotel in Assisi

by deecat

While in Assisi, we stayed in The Umbra Hotel right off the main piazza,Piazza del Comune, which is on the west side. ( It is closed mid January until mid March. )

This hotel is housed in an old palazzo and has lots of antique furniture, renovated bathrooms (ours was quite small), balconies, and the Umbra restaurant. It also has a small but lovely garden in front. This hotel is very hidden. and could be hard to find.

It has firm beds, English speaking channels on TV, excellent showers with good pressure, and the PERFECT LOCATION, across from Temple of Minerva.

I feel that the LOCATION and the GARDEN were the outstanding positives of Hotel Umbra.

One has to walk down an alleyway (by down I mean incline going down) to reach the entrance. The first thing you see is the garden. I imagine in very hot months that would be even more of a plus. It is right in the center of town.

Hotel Umbra is family owned and run.

Hotel San Luca: Elegant Hotel in Spoleto

by deecat

While in Spoleto we stayed in a fantastic Inn called Hotel San Luca. It was an ex-tannery of the 19th century which has been beautifully renovated. There are 35 rooms, all unique.

The new bathrooms are in Carrara Marble.
The bathrooms were really special with double sinks, towel warmers, and tub and shower.
There is a private garage available and car parking outside.

Our room had a small balcony, satellite TV, a safe, two telephones (one in the bathroom), minibar, hairdryer, and telephone with direct outside line.

The other parts of this elegant hotel are just as excellent: An Italian garden, peaceful courtyard, beautiful large breakfast room with pastel yellow walls and eight arched windows with views of that serene courtyard, & Cappuccino in the 24-hour bar.

This is a family-owned small hotel with both an air of sophistication and an abundance of warm hospitality.

Its location is perfect for exploring the historic town (Note: everything in the town is uphill).

The owners are friendly and quite helpful.

The breakfast, which was included in the price, was outstanding. Fresh fruits, slivered meats, cheeses, pasteries, cereals, and cappuccino

The beautiful courtyard and garden.

Hotel Santa Maria degli Ancillotti: Country living - with some pampering

by sierralyndon

We tried this agriturismo just outside of Assisi, convenient to the various locations we wanted to get to.

This was a typical agriturismo (bed and breakfast). A welcome change from chain hotels. These are locales where the owners are real farmers (olive oil, wine and other produce like cheese, honey, etc.). As a side business, they open their farms to guests.

Being a member of the charme & relax network, it was a bit pricey, but it was just such a nice place. In April, the swimming pool was not yet open, but it would have been splendid had it been! They had two dogs (one huge terranova and another strange pinscher I think that rule the roost). The father and son run the operations and mum and daughter-in-law always cook... really, really good dinners!

Our room turned out to be an apartment with a living room, small kitchenette and a separate bedroom and showers/toilets. Really comfy.

In the basement of the building, there is a small church. The owners told us that during the massive earthquake that did lots of damage to the Umbria area (destroying quite a bit of the famous church in Assisi), their little church was the only one functioning.

There are tonnes of agriturismi in Umbria, just try searches using agriturismi or agriturismo as key words.
