Trains from Rome Termini to Perugia or Assisi

by Glen30

Hello,

I have read a few articles that you need to change trains at Foligno on the way to either Assisi or Perugia. However, having checked the schedules on treinitalia.com, it seems there are direct trains from Rome to these 2 cities without transferring. Is that true?

For instance:
http://orario.trenitalia.com/b2c/nppPriceTravelSolutions.do?car=A&stazin=rome+termini&stazout=perugia&datag=09&datam=09&dataa=2009&timsh=09&datag_r=12&datam_r=09&dataa_r=2009&timsh_r=10&stazin_r=perugia&stazout_r=rome+termini&timsm=15&timsm_r=15&lang=en&nreq=5&channel=tcom&npag=1&lang_r=en&nreq_r=5&channel_r=tcom&npag_r=1&x=32&y=11

If I were to take the train departing Rome termini at 11.57am, I don't need to transfer elsewhere?

Can someone let me know what fare 39/AS means? I don't really understand. Is this the fare to go with if I were to buy a ticket online?

Cheers
Glen

The link does not work, but I checked the timetables and you are right: there are direct regional trains to Assisi and Perigua from Rome. Depending on your schedule, you can, of course, choose them, despite being slightly slower than other journeys that include an express train. Do not worry about the fare: it's a bureaucratic Italian language meaning "the fare for travels across regions" (in this case Lazio and Umbria) and it is the only regular fare, with all others being reductions for disabled travelers and the like. You do not need to buy regional train tickets in advance. Instead allow for 5-10 minutes at Termini to buy one before boarding and do not forget to validate it. The fare shown online will be the same as the one that the ticket machine/cashier will require. Ticket machines are faster and speak foreign languages, unlike most Italian ticket officers.

If you choose a journey that contains an express train, you can benefit from the Promo reduced fare (15%), but you have to buy it separately only for the express train section of the journey. However, it binds you to a particular train and for this short distance the reduction will be only a couple of euro.

Glen, you're reading the schedule correctly. I imagine that the people who said that you had to change at Foligno were probably looking at the raileurope.com website, because it often doesn't list local ("regional") trains. You will notice that from Rome to Assisi, most of the fast trains like Eurostar would require a change at Foligno (except for Eurostars at 13:31 and 20:00 from Termini).

The 39/AS tariff is explained at http://www.trenitalia.com/cms-file/html/trenitalia_en/info_tariffe/Info_Tariffe_en.html#2

For regional trains you have absolutely no reason to buy the ticket online in advance. You can't make a reservation on a regional train (if you have a ticket and have room to stand, you can get on), so buying in advance gets you nothing.

You CAN buy such tickets online, however, you are limited to how far in advance you can buy them (without them expiring). Once you buy them online, you can't change them, but since they are tremendously easy to buy at the station (all the bigger stations have ticket machines so you don't even need to go to the ticket window), there just isn't any reason to do it in advance and take the risk that your plans will change.

Yes, fare 39/AS is the standard fare. '39' refers to a class of tariffs for simple one way or round trip trips in the regions on regional trains, and define the cost per kilometers in each region. There are no discount fares available to non-residents on regional trains...

OK?

Travel Tips for Perugia

Palazzo dei Priori

by Willettsworld

This marvellous large box shaped palace is one of Umbria's finest public buildings built between 1293 and 1443. Above the doorway are a pair of large bronzes made in 1274 - a Guelph lion and a griffin, the medieval emblems of Perugia. Inside are fine rooms such as the Sala dei Notari (the former lawyer's hall) and the Sala di Udienze del Collegio della Mercanzia (the Merchants' Guild room).

Also in the palace is the Collegio del Cambio, Perugia's former money exchange which was begun in 1452. This room was used by the Bankers Guild. It's walls are covered with superlative frescoes (1498-1500) by Perugino.

Open 9.00-12.30, 14.30-17.30
Sala dei Notari Open: 9.00-13.00, 15.00-19.00
