Scenery along journey from Venice to Cortina
by victorwkf
One of my fondest memories is the beautiful scenery during the train journey from Venice to Calalzo Di Cadore (please visit my VT Calalzo page) followed by the 1 hour bus journey from Calalzo Di Cadore to Cortina d'Ampezzo. You will start in the sea lagoons and flat land of Venice and the Veneto plains, then slowly work your way up to green hills, deep valleys, lakes, rivers etc and finally to the imposing Dolomite Mountains region.
Cinque Torri

Actually, there are more then five peaks all together; Torre del Barancio, Lusy, Romana, Grande, Terza, Quarta and Inglese are the names of of the "Five Towers".
I couldn't approach closer to the Five Towers because of the high snow all around, so I took this picture from the road. Next time, in the different season, I would like to take the closer look of the area.
The area of Cinque Torri is valuable for intermediates skiers.

"to hell with the cost"
Cortina d'ampezzo in the Italian Dolomites, is the epitimy of Italian chic and unashamedly so. Not the resort for a budget holiday - be ready to dig deep.Cortina screams anti p.c. from the fur coat parade every evening to the Ferraris and Bentleys. Not the place for eco warriors to hang out.
All that said, Cortina has some of the best alpine skiing in Italy. It also has some of Italy's best restaurants. This is a resort full of glitterazzi and the paparazzi that follow them. Come to Cortina and rub shoulders with the stars. Bring your credit cards - you'll need 'em.
