Villa Bruna: D finds a gem....

We had the misfortune to arrive in Cortina during a thunderstorm and on a Friday night. All rooms were booked or way out of our price range. The town was confusing, with all roads seeming to be one way and circling the center. So, we made our way out of the center and found this gem of a place.

The room was very nicely and tastefully furnished and let out onto a great old fashioned wooden balcony. The owner was friendly and glad to have us as we were the only ones staying there. The best part was the breakfast room, which had not only a great area to eat but also a huge comfortable couch, TV and stereo. We used it well as Cortina is a bit upscale and it was not the best weather, so we went out and got some local prociutto, cheese, bread and wine.

Refugio Ciareido: one more small hike, solo

I woke up early the day after the steinbock/butterfly episode and it was just gorgeous out. Doreen was in a deep sleep and was exhausted from the previous day's hike, but I couldn't sleep with the sun rising and a multitude of peaks jutting up from what appeared a cloudy valley below. It was just a 45 minute hike to the Refugio Clareido so I made the extra effort and hiked there alone and was very happy I did. It was the best light for photos of the whole trip and the peaks were splendid as they peeked up from the clouds below.

This is another fantastic and well situated refugio and offered great and different views of the Marmarole and the next valley over.

Refugio Chiggiato: another idyllic spot....

Another ideally situated Refugio, in a bowl of mountain peaks, with the mightly Antelao as your door stop.

We didn't stay here as it was not open for the season but it was an easy day hike from Refugio Baion. The owners were around and were nice enough to make us an expresso and let us sit inside while there were a few drops of rain intruding on our otherwise perfect day.

Refugio Baion: paradise at a small cost....

This rustic mountain hut offers comfortable if simple accomodation in dorm or private rooms. The rooms were spartan but clean and though there was no heat, there were plenty of wool blankets to keep you warm

The room in itself was just okay but for what amounts to less than $30 and in this location, it's tough to beat. The fire place in the dining area makes up for any lack of facilities anywhere else in the building and there are running toilets too! :)
