Train takes 5+ hours (from Como Nord Borghi) so it's not really a feasible option for an independent daytrip.

www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html will give you train routes/times/fares in english.

You might be lucky and find a local firm which runs day trips from Como (or elsewhere).

The towns and villages around Lago di Garda are full of advertisements by local bus companies offering day trips by coach to Venice, Verona and other destinations. Keep your eyes open when you get there. You could also visit the local tourist office on your first day there, they will for sure be able to help.
You will spend long hours on the bus, more than you'll actually have in Venice, and it will be some kind of tacky tourist rat race, but if you really really want to go in spite of all that, you'll find options.

Travel Tips for Malcesine

I've now been through the place a couple of times but this occasion we stopped for a cuppa at a delightful little bakery on the eastern side of the main road, just down from the main carpark.
It's a nice little town but somehow doesn't have the ambience of Malcesine and the view, though very good, isn't quite as dramatic. We trolled down there and had it all to ourselves. There's no view but let that not detract from your enjoyment. The atmosphere was delightful as was the service and we spent some time walking the streets afterwards, as the photos show.
