When are you travelling? In Summer there is a bus (runs once a day) direct from Venice to Malcesine.
Last year it was from june 11th to sept 28th (look here: http://www.aptv.it/pdf/Riva-ve.pdf)

If not, the best way is a train along the Venice route Venice - Milan to Verona nearly every hour.
Look here http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/ferrovie/util/inglese.jsp
Type venezia Santa lucia as departure, and verona Porta Nuova as arrival.

the timetable goes only 2 months or so ahed, but just choose a day of the week (e.g. friday) similar to the one you need, and you will have a nice idea of what to expect.

From just outside the porta Nuova Station you will find a bus of the ATV (or with the old brand name APTV) direct to MAlcesine... Once again every hour or so..
This is the timetable (line 62/64)
http://www.aptv.it/pdf/62-64.pdf

prices..... the bus around 6 euro, the train depends on class and kind of train (try and buy) but should be around 20.

Ciao

The Trenitalia site in English is very user-friendly, but won't accept 'Malcensine'. Enter Venezia and Verona Porto Nuova and you will find times/fares. Journey ;length varies from 1 to 2 hours.

J

sure it does not accept Malcesine.... there is no train line up there!

The closer one is Peschiera, at maybe 50 kms, but Verona makes much more sense coming from venice, because all of the bus lines to the easter shore of the lake starts exactly in front of the station.

That's exactly the sort of information one doesn't know when using rail sites abroad (although I have posted about Malcensine's lack of a station fairly recently), and one then doesn't know the nearest station to search for. That's why I posted what I did, and why your first reply was so helpful.

TY J..... And it's always a pleasure to be of some help... expecially about the places that i know and love so well. I spent so many holydays and sailing days in Malcesinee, that simply remember makes me feel better. I still have friends there (and relatives's holydays houses are there).

But of course, you understand me... You are so helpful in all of the Italian forums...
I see we share more than a passion..... I fell in love with Archeology at age of 9... When my parents made me see the Romun forum.... I cannot forget that visit...!

O.............a fellow archie! How wonderful!

Being able to visit Italy has made my passion for archeology even greater. I would love to be able to dig there, but sadly the cost is prohibitive.

So I shall assuage my passion by seeing as much as I possibly can, whilst eating as much gelati as I can! :-)

Travel Tips for Malcesine

Malcesine, Lake Garda - best town to be in

by monkeydennis

"Malcesine Old Town"

The town of Malcesine with it's castle is a lovely place. Great to explore with all the cobbled streets, shops, restaurants and day to day life. It has a small harbour where private charters leave for the north of the lake and where the Lake ferries stop for passengers. The car ferry is half a mile further down the lake.
We found it was the perfect place for us to be as even though there are obviously lots of tourists it seemed a more authentic place to stay and less commercial than some of the other towns. Also the streets never seemed to get too busy, but it was only June for us. The fact that the cable car is there is a bonus and that there a few beaches further out of town. Lots of restaurants to choose from too. There is a central car park at €1.40 per hour but its closed on Saturday for the market. The only bad thing about the north of lake Garda is that most of the signs, menus cater for Germans. When I'm in Italy on holiday I want to see Italian... No - I don't want English in another country either, I'd rather struggle with my phrase book.

"Tourist Bus"

This was a life saver! Having a 6 year old and our hotel being up the hill and a 20 minute walk at night was do-able, but a bus is better.
basicall the tourist bust goes from the bus station on the hour down the lake to Cassone (10 mins) then turns round and goes back Malcesine and drops off at the Cable Car station at 20 past, then goes up the hill and back down the lake just past Navene then back to Malcesine on the hour. Sounds complicated but when you are there is all drops into place! And the best bit - its only €1 per adult each way - no matter how far you go.

"Ferries to the south of the Lake"

Found that the cost of the ferries were not as good as we hoped. It cost €20 for 2 adults and a child to get across the Lake to Limone. We did a trip on the fast ferry to Sirmione and that cost nearly €70 for 2 adults and 1 child. Not worth it. Heck of a lot of money for an hour and a half each way on the ferry and only a few hours a Sirmione. Also there aren't many ferries that go the full length of the lake. Only 4 a day.
