Searching for a place to stay while visiting Venice I quickly found that hotels there could easily run 150 euros or more a night. So I began to look at nearby Mestre. Vt member Leics review and their great spring price made this a done deal.
The Hotel Cris is a small older two story hotel located about 500 meters from the Mestre Train Station. Coming from the train station it is easy to find even at night.
We stayed at the hotel for four nights and given Room 101 on the first floor. The room had two twin beds, adequate light and a nice bathroom. My biggest complaint about the location is that it was by the front desk and when folks rang the bell to be let in during the day, the bell became annoying. There are also no screens on the window or working AC so if you leave the windows open you will get the noise from the adjacent parking lot and a few bugs in your face. However courtesy of a sound blocking machine we were both able to sleep well.
Staff at the Hotel Cris were helpful. They provided a map and some ideas of how to get to Venice and what to see in Mestre. Getting to Venice was super easy by taking the # 2 bus just a few steps outside of the hotel on the Via Piave. About 1 1/2 km was the lovely Piazza Ferretto and the Galleria which was a delight to visit in the evening. Hotel staff also provided assistance on how to use the very slow but adequate public computer in the first floor hall.
New sheets and towels were provided every day and the maids did an excellent job of cleaning the room.
The price of the room was very reasonable. Each night with breakfast came to only 71 euros plus city tax. They accept credit cards but ask that the City tax of 2 euros per day be paid in cash. Rates vary widely during the year at the Hotel Cris from 45-100 euros for a twin or double room. Best tip is to book early and get the best rate possible without having to pay for a non-refundable room.
Unique Quality: The breakfasts in the morning were lovely. A wide selection of meats, cheeses, cereals, fresh fruit and sweets. The breakfast room was never overly crowded either. We always left with a smile on our faces and a full stomach,
The location of the hotel was also a welcome surprise. The journey into Venice via the public bus never took more than 15 minutes either leaving or coming back. The Mestre Train Station was convenient for a short trip to Padova and a longer trip to Milan.
Another nice touch of the hotel is that they sold tickets both for the bus to Venice as well as the vaporettos there. It made standing in lines totally unnecessary.
Directions: From MP airport, take ACTC Bus # 15 to the Mestre Train Station. From the station go down Via Piave, four blocks and turn left on Via Monte Nero
We decided to stay in Mestre because Venice hotels are so expensive. Having been before, I know it would be easy to get to Venice by train or local bus, so I wanted a Mestre hotel near the station.
The Hotel Cris fitted the bill perfectly. It's family-owned, sparklingly clean and set on a quiet side-street about 5 minutes' walk from Mestre station and the ATVO airport bus stop. The bus stop for the number 2 Mestre>Venezia bus is less than a minute away.
Although check-in closes at 2100 staff were happy to check us in later (I emailed beforehand) as our flight did not arrive until 2100. We had booked two single rooms: mine on the first floor, my friend on the ground floor. Both were beautifully clean, with comfortable beds, safe, TV etc. The en suites were as clean as the rest of the hotel, and equipped with a bidet.
Breakfast was excellent: good coffee (served in a jug) or cappuchino or tea, juice (blood orange, which was lovely), cereals, brioches, rolls, yoghurts, eggs, meat, cheese...and delicious cakes (I saved that until my last morning!).
Via Monte del Nero is a very quiet road, with little traffic. I always use ear-plugs, but my friend also noted that the hotel was quiet.
There is secure car parking for guests, which is a very big plus. The car park/courtyard is equipped with a large table, umbrella and chairs...an ideal spot to sit and read for a while after a busy day exploring the area.
Staff were all pleasant, courteous and helpful with good English. They clearly get many guests of different nationalities, and are organised for this. Bus and vaporetto tickets are available and there is a computer for guest use in the foyer (as well as free wifi).
The hotel is particularly secure. You have to buzz to be allowed in. If you come back after 2300, the small key provided opens the electronic car park gate and there is an entry code for the rear door.
All in all, this is an excellent and very reasonably-priced place to stay if Venice itself is outside your budget. Meals and drinks are also cheaper in Mestre, by the way, and there are several places to eat near the hotel (Mestre's historical centre is about 10 minutes' walk).
One thing to be aware of: Venice and Mestre have recently introduced a city tax. This is a very small amount (about 2 euro per night in high season), but the hotel wanted it paid in cash rather than included in the bill.
Definitely a good place to stay.
I booked through www.booking.com
Directions: From Mestre station, walk up Via Piave. Via Monte del Nero is the fourth on the left.
I was very pleased with this small hotel. and the next time I go to Mestre/Venice I'll stay there again.
It's well placed for both the bus and the train to Venice, but in a quiet side street. The room was warm (in March), clean and pleasant. The people on the desk were very helpful. Breakfast was better than average for a hotel.
I thought the hotel was very good value.
There's an excellent restaurant just round the corner where I had supper.
Unique Quality: Quiet, good position, friendly
Directions: About a hundred and fifty yards from the station, up a side street just after the Ristorante Orientale
