Trip from Venice to Stra

by sleporis

I'd like to know how far is Stra from Venice, how long will it take by car?

Going to Venice end of July 2007.

Thanks,
Slavica

RE: Trip from Venice to Stra

Our ever-dependable www.viamichelin.com says that the distance is 34 kilometers but that the trip will take an hour and nine minutes(!). Well, if you look at the results carefully, the website says that you will spend a total of an hour and 9 minutes, with 9 minutes on the 11 kilometers of motorway...so I guess the traffic and number of stoplights must be pretty bad on the other 23 kilometers ;-)

Travel Tips for Stra

Brenta Canal Cruise

by sandysmith

Although an expensive trip the Brenta River canal cruise from Venice to Stra was a wonderful relaxing way to see the canal scenery, once past the industrial are of Fusina and all those grand old villas - in various states of repair. Along the way, Il Burchiello (the cruise company we used) stops at three of the most important mansions: Villa Pisani, Barchessa Valmarana or Villa Widmann and Villa Foscari "Malcontenta". It was peaceful and a lovely breeze to contrast with the humidity and hustle and bustle of Venice as we sat at the front of the boat enjoying the vistas and being entertained with the guide's commentary. We visited two villas e-route and had a lunch stop before we came to the last villa - the grandest at Stra, the Villa Pisani. It was a memorable highlight of our trip too Venice summer 2005 and money well spent.

The Brenta-Canal

by globetrott

The Brenta - canal was built in order to get fresh water into the lagune around venice and to regulate the mud that was transported by plenty of small rivers. Soon the " high society " of Venice had the idea to build their summer-palaces along the newly built canal ( built in the 16th century )

Brenta Villas

by sandysmith

The Brenta Riviera is llike an extension of Venice onto the mainland, almost a continuation of the lagoon city: Between the 16th and 18th centuries the Brenta Riviera experienced a golden age which turned it into a privileged holiday resort for rich Venetian nobles. The nobles built numerous villas along its riverbanks, designed and decorated by masters of Italian art - decadent homes to entertain in. One of the best ways to view them is to sail slowly down the river. See travelogue for many more pics.

Villa Foscari

by sandysmith

Villa Foscari is also known as "La Malcontenta" and has a tranquil setting by the Brenta. Its greek temple-front design is unmistakable by Andrea Palladio.
Opening: April - October (Tuesdays and Saturdays).
Hours: 9.00 a.m. - 12.00 a.m. Other days: book to visit. (opens for tour groups doing the Brenta Cruise) We had a 30 minute stop here and this was enough to view the few rooms on display and a short walk in the gardens.

Plenty of cosy corners on Brenta canal

by globetrott

You will see plenty of cosy corners for a picknick or a simple walk on Brenta canal.

At plenty of places you may park your car beside the street, take out your easy-chair and take a rest.

Car-trafic is not very heavy eighter in the small villages along the Brenta-canal, as most of the streets are too small for big trucks, and so you will meet only a few local people and a few tourist buses there.
You would not believe, that busy and touristy Venezia is in a distance of just 15 km.
