transport to Milan

by JanCB

Please can you advise the best way to visit Milan from Torri del Benaco. Either on public transport, or are there organised excursions? I am visiting in September.

Thank you:)

I don't know if there are orgaised excursions, but you can take bus 62/64 to Peschiera del Garda and get the train from there. An early start will give you more time to explore.

Here's the bus timetable:

It takes about 30 minutes to get to Peschiera. There are trains to Milan from there, but be warned that there are not trains between 0857 and 1222. Journey time is from around an hour, one-way fare from 7.80 euro.

Hmmmn, leics did you a big favor by pointing out that Peschiera del Garda has limited rail service to Milan in the morning, because there appears to be only one bus that leaves Torri del Benaco in time to get there before 8:57 - and that bus leaves TdB at 05:57! Yikes! (the next bus is scheduled to arrive at exactly 08:57 - that's assuming no delays on the road)

OK, Plan B - if you take the 07:12 bus from TdB, it goes all the way to the bus depot in Verona (which is almost certainly close to the train station) - it arrives at 08:25. Then you can catch the train at 08:32, 08:40 or 09:02...and there's 09:32 and 10:05 if there's a disaster on the bus...

Anyway, compare bus schedule and train schedule and make sure you have a fallback plan.

P.S. bus and train schedules are usually aligned in Italy; that is, I find it odd that the bus arrives at 08:57, the moment the train is supposed to depart. Usually, there is a 10 or more minute gap, to allow commuters to make the connection. Thus, when you get to Torri del Benaco, ask at the hotel (or wherever) to see if the bus schedule has changed to accommodate the train schedule (or vice versa)...

Ciao Bill, Ciao Leics!

>are there organised excursions?

Maybe, but i don't think so. Milan isn't such a popular destination from the eastern side of the lake.

As for the rest, probably the plan Bill is suggesting is the best. The bus terminal in Verona is right in front of the station.

And no, i don't think they'll change the schedule to accommodate a possible and rare connection in a secondary station.

And always keep in mind buses may be late, because the road is narrow and for many reason (local daily markets or crowds and wild parking on a sunny weekend, as examples) may cause traffic jams a bus cannot skip. That is less likely in september, thought.

Ciao
Francesco

Travel Tips for Torri del Benaco

Beaches

by effeti

Not everywhere in the lake there are beaches and very few are sandy ( and none of the sandy ones is natural).
The typical look of a beach of the norther side of the like is the one you can see in te picture: a little stripe of pebbles. The more the beach is exposed to the wave of the strong north-easterly winds, the more rounded the pebbles are.
Despite the little extensions, those beaches won't be crowded, however (except maybe on sundays) because the space between the lake and the mountanis does not allow too many hotels, camping, etc. from Garda and up north. Reading your favorite book of the moment, sitting on the beach and facing the sunset, while everybody (at least the tourists *wink*) are already having dinner....
