Regata Storica 2009

by jackb_00

I am arriving in Venice on Sunday Sep 6, and just found out that is the day for Regata Storica. This is a lucky coincidence. My question is this- will the vaporetti operate during the time of the regata? I need to take line 1 from the train station to S. Angelo. I have seen the schedule and it seems that most things start happening around 3:00 which is about the time of my arrival. I may be able to get an earlier train if needed.

If anyone knows the closing times for the grand canal, it would also be helpful. I just need to figure out a way to get from the train station to S. Angelo on that day. I suppose that walking is possible, but I will have suitcases in tow.

Travel Tips for Venice

Italian Gellato

by catpause

Do not miss out on the Italian Gellato. It is sort of a soft ice cream. It can be found everywhere and is inexpensive. You have to eat quickly as it melts fast in the hot weather. It is very refreshing.

My favorite is lemon, especially since I enjoy tart/sour. There was many a day that I indulged more than once.

Canals...and lots of them.

by meteorologist1

Venice has hundreds of canals in which boats drive through. These are like the "streets" for transportation in Venice. There are pedestrian walkways along the canals, but they are narrow, and with the large number of people, it can get extremely crowded. But this is the beauty of Venice...canals.

Carnival

by dvideira

( my brother's carnival pics - 2002 )

The Carnival is a century-old tradition in Venice and reached its maximum splendour in the 18th century. it was celebrated from December 26 and reached its climax the day before Ash Wednesday, also known as "Mardi Gras". During the period of Carnival it seems that every excess was permitted and the fact that everyone wore masks seemed to abolish all social division and to set aside the rules of behavior.

The Carnival was restored to life since 1980. People come from all over the world to enjoy private and public masked balls and masked revelers of all ages invade the campi

Fascinating, Sardonic Graffiti

by gilescorey

One of the most surprising sights in Venice is the graffiti. It's everywhere! And, unlike some other European cities, most of what I saw was not political. There is a distinctly humorous and artistic bent to the works. Plus, the very presence of the graffiti is another element that humanizes this amazing city. Along with UPS boats on the canals, clotheslines and hidden supermarkets, little ingredients like "graffiti" keep Venice from becoming a living museum. Delightful!

Inside the Basilica

by sim1

The interior of the church was designed to form a Greek cross. Each arm of the cross has three aisles separated from one another by round arches upon marble columns. There are five large domes held up by massive pillars. The floor is covered with mosaic designs. There is 4,000 meters of mosaic which cover every surface of the church. Most of the Mosaics were from the 12th to 14th centuries.
