You should a consider a tour by "Knowing Venice." They do group and couples tours and cover the must-see sites of Venice (e.g. San Marco) as well as some less-visited sites. I am not sure what the costs are at a moment, but I took a tour with an English speaking guide and it was wonderful. They a website: www.knowingvenice.com. Ask for Giuseppina. Or send them an email at english@knowingvenice.com.

Ravi - are you staying in Venice or just visiting for 4 hours ? Not a lot can be achieved in 4 hours except the St marks Square important landmark buildings which are the Basilica, the Doges Palace and the Bell Tower. These 3 can be visited at your leisure. Of course the group tours can get access to these places (not the Bell tower) quicker but half the fun of Venice is also wandering around the shops off St Marks and using the TRAGHETTO which is a Gondola used for conveying people across the Grand Canal ! It only costs 50 Cents ! AND you can boast that you had a trip on a Gondola.

If you only have a few hours to spare then, imo, there is very little point in paying out for an organised tour.

Venice is a small city and very walkable (it only takes about an hour to cross it on foot). You can easily see the main sights simply by using a city map (easily available) and exploring by yourself. A guidebook, of course, will add to the experience.

Venice is also expensive... very little is what might be termed 'budget', I'm afraid.

Hi, if you visit my Venice page, On my intro I've put links to a walk around San Marco to Rialto Bridge, that covers some of the main sights and some off the beaten track views as well.

Travel Tips for Venice

Classical music in reverent settings

by universalgypsy

The Chiesa San Bartolomeo, right next to the Rialto Bridge, hosts concerts by local classical ensembles. I was able to catch a concert by ' Interpreti Veneziani' when I was there. Vivaldi, Bach and Francesco Geminiani were played, with the ornate altar as a backdrop. The atmosphere was reverent and exaltant, which was in great contrast to the fresh, young ensemble playing that night. All in all, the church as a venue, did not tame the enthusiasm and applause that broke out when the musicians laid down their instruments. The audience shouted for more and the musicians did not hesitate to deliver.

The Birds

by OrlandoBR

Feeding the pigeons at Piazza San Marco. Not me, my sister; we bought bird food and used up an entire roll of film here... all the photos came out wonderful - people love them. We won't forget the Hitchcockian feeling of having hundreds of birds all around us, we had lots of fun!!

Notice the scaffolding covering the Palazzo Ducale on the right. The panel covering it showed a reproduction of the building... who were they trying to fool??

St Marks

by sandysmith

Drinking in all the wonderful architecture everywhere - this is part of St Marks the main church in Venice and a must see of course.
The different colours in the marble, the views of the domes and intricate details were mesmerising. You could spend hours just here!

Venetian style windows

by montezaro

In my hometown of Pula, which were under the rule of Venice, there are only a few palaces left built in Venetian style. The citizens of Pula and visitors admire them in particular way, especially the windows. Here in Venice, however, such a windows can be seen all around the town. This one is particularly beautiful flanked by two small balconies.
My country, Croatia, have contributed to the beauty of Venice too. The great many of Venice churches and palaces was built from the stone originated from Istria and island of Brac.

The most popular souveniar...

by Giulia_ua

The most popular souveniar from Venice is Venetian mask - they are hand made, each colored by artists. It is hard to find two masks that will be absolutely identical. And they are really very beautiful
