In Venice for a month, mid-April through mid-May, would like to meet other travelers

by marisyl

My husband and I have rented an apartment in Cannareggio, near Ca' d'Oro, from April 13-May 9, 2009. Of course, we are looking forward to all the wonders of exploring this fascinating place, but would like to meet other travelers, too.
We are in our 60s, love all the arts, and live in the San Francisco Bay Area. John is a software engineer in Silicon Valley, who is also writing a novel, and I am a retired editor.
We enjoy visiting Europe using the "slow travel" approach, finding an apartment and getting a sense of life as it is lived, rather than passing through with a checklist of Must Sees.
This will be our second visit to Venice. Other favorite destinations are Paris, Berlin, London, New York, Philadelphia and Barcelona.
We love Donna Leon's Venice novels, although they show the darkest side of the ancient city.

We had five weeks in Venice in January/February of this year and had we or you been there then or now, would have loved to have met up! For any stay over a few days we always rent and echo your comments! We rented an apartment in the Rialto area and renting is the way to go. If you have any questions re grocery stores and/or so on, please email me.

Travel Tips for Venice

Venice.. is it really romantic?

by JuliaK

This thought was always in my mind while we were there...And I think I know the answer..
YES there is something magic about this place!!
But you have to be in-love and everything is magical then anyway!!!
Every step of mine was romantic and full of love because I was next to that man...
It couldn't be a better gift (except the whole trip there)!!!

Working Class Canal

by tpal

"Taking a different route" is what its all about in Venice. The joy of discovery is around every corner. The day we had planned to visit Burano and Murano we realized that the long route might be the most interesting. We boarded the west bound Number 52 vaporetto at the Zattere stop and took a long looping cruise around the western end of Venice with its railroad yards, car parks and oddly contemporary buildings. Eventually we reentered the Grand Canal at the Santa Lucia Train Station and then turned left up the Canale di Cannaregio.

I recently read that only three waterways in Venice had the status of "canal"...the Giudecca, the Grand and the Cannaregio. The Cannaegio is definitely the narrowest of the three and perhaps because of this appears to be the busiest. The #52 vaporettos are smaller and lower in the water than most. The rationale for this became clear as we started weaving our way through the canal, even backing up at one point. Lining both sides were delivery barges unloading produce and other market goods. At some points the chop in the water was quite dramatic.

The bridge in the photo is the Ponte delle Guglie built in the 16th century. Its array of faces along the arch and the obelisks at either end make it very distinctive. Quite interesting but, in my mind, not nearly as captivating as the glimpse of everyday Venetian life we were experiencing.

Arsenal Entrance

by sandysmith

This is the view of the twin towers of the Arsenal as you approach on the canal path.
Water buses used to navigate through here - but not in recent years. Being a military establishment its not open to the public - virtually everybody walked up tot the gates to be told no enrty - guards must have got really fed up with that. It is possible to ask the Military Authorities for permission to visit though.

Mardi Gras-Venetian Style

by kcochran111

Planning on visiting Italy in the weeks before Lent begins (usually late February, early March)? Hit the streets of Venice to partake in Carnevale, the most ornate Mardi Gras celebration in Italy. Bring cash, too, because mask vendors don't take credit cards!

Colder here than in Rome

by maritoni

less luggage, the better as their local vaporretto will charge you more for excessive luggage... jackets, scarves, hat in the winter... It is colder here because the location is in the ocean itself...
