What a breakfast!!

OK, this place was great! Definitely going to stay here when we go back - just make sure you book in advance. Quiet neighbourhood, but so convenient - 1 min from ferry stop, and a heavenly chocolate shop across from the door! Well priced (I had been told by someone that every place they looked at in Venice was well over 150 euro, this was 72 euro for two of us - well worth it). The breakfast was nothing short of amazing. Cereal, juice, rolls with cheese and ham if you wanted. Coffee, tea, basket of fresh crusty rolls, toast, crossiants with lemon filling, jams and marmalades. With what we paid for the room, that breakfast would be worth at least 15 euro at a hotel. And we had been going to ask if we could leave our bags as our flight out was late in the evening and we didn't want to have to pay at the train station - we didn't even have to ask - the owner asked us if we'd like to leave our bags, in a locked closet, and gave us keys to get back into the place so we could collect our bags. This place was really a gem, and if you can get it booked, do it!

Unique Quality: Not really any view from our room, but, as said above, convenience and price were a great factor. We opted for a room with separate bathroom, but it was our private bathroom, and only a few steps from the room. Breakfast - A1 - awesome.

Directions: Get off at San Toma stop, up the alley, take a left - right across from chocolate shop. Literally, about 45 sec walk from ferry stop.

Not sure what your informant meant by "old" and "new". Venice proper is all a network of canals and has hundreds of hotels. They may mean Venice Mestre by "new", which is the industrial town right before you cross the long bridge to Venice. A good place to start would be to look at some traveler's pages on Venice and peruse hotel recommendations. What is your budget? If you're looking for something modestly price, we liked Hotel Marin ( which is a short walk from the train station.

We stayed at Al Campaniel in San Polo. Very reasonable prices and right in the middle of Venice near lots of good restaurants. About 10-15 mins walk to Rialto and St Marks.

We've booked to stay in Hotel; Marin from previous recommendations on this site...very reasonably priced for Venice; we'll be there in April, if you're going at a later date, I will let you know! A :)

I highly, highly recommend the Ca' del Dose. The location is local, authentic, perfect. Close by major sites like the Doge's Palace and St. Mark's Square. Equidistant from the San Zaccaria and Arsenale vaporetto stops. The couple who run this B&B -- Anna and Marco -- are sweet, generous, and amazing. They go out of their way to make you feel at home and well cared for. I stayed with them for one month in the fall of 2004 and another month in the fall of 2005. Love them, love the hotel!

Please tell them hello and that Marisa di California says hello :)
