More about Al Vagon

Ristoranti al Vagon

by mdraper about Ristoranti al Vagon

This is a family run restaurant (obviously not unusual) that has a varied menu. The food is good; the people running it wonderful. Be sure to say hello to Kiku (the owner's dog). Kiku used to belong to the owner's grandfather who passed away in the summer of 2001. Hopefully, from this, you can tell that it is just a nice place to be and, as a special treat, the food is good, too. Tortillini in cream sauce ... absolutely delicious!

Al Vagon

by myriam_c about Al Vagon

This is a fairly large trattoria where you can sit in the dining room (not very cozy) and on their sidewalk terrace next to a canal.
The service is very good and friendly. The food is upto standards. For starter my husband had pasta in a black sauce (made with inkfish) while I took a thick vegetable soup. For our main course we both took sole in a white wine sauce which was very good.
A bottle of white wine went with this meal.

Beautiful

by traveloturc about Al Vagon

Trattoria Al Vagon is another beautiful restaurant along the canal. Its run by a serious family and they take very seriously what they are doing. Its buld in 1951 and now into its third generation,is proud to have conserved the great tradition of Venetian cuisine based on fish
and shellfish. This is also a beautiful spot for a romantic dinner the only disturbands are the Gondoles who passes from the canal...closed on tuesdays prosciutto e melone

2 Questions

by jquick77

This will be my fiance and I's first times in Venice, so we have tons of question, but two in particular. Unfortunately, we will only be in Venice for a day because we're leaving for our cruise the next day.

Quest.1) We are looking at possibly staying at Hotel Al Vagon, has anyone stayed there? What is it like? Do you have any other suggestions for hotels or B&B's in that price range (approx. 100-140 Euros)(remeber we leave the next day, so I think we need to stay in the city)?

Quest. 2) Our cruise is on MSC Italian Cruises, has anyone traveled with them before? What were they like? (BTW, we are traveling on the Melody)?

Any and all info is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance to everyone for all of their help.

-John

I hope you have a wonderful time and that the accomodations are better than the ratings.

http://www.vacationstogo.com/cruiselines/MediterraneanShippingCruises.cfm

That site can tell you more, but the Melody was built in 1982 holds 1076 passengers and is rated a 2.5 on a scale of 1-6 (6 being the best).

http://www.vacationstogo.com/cruiseports/256.cfm

this url should tell you a bit about Venice; not knowing which day you are leaveing I chose the 11 day cruise leaving May 14 on the Melody.

To put the ship in perspective, the Holland America Noordam built in 1984 gets a 3.0 rating and it is going in for a complete overhaul this year. I was on it in January and I was on it in 1984. It was showing its age but had been maintained well. So if your's was maintained will, all should be well.

Many times the ships are rated down due to "creature comforts" but a 5-6 ship will run you in to 5 figures for a ticket.

As for the hotel or B&B, hopefully another VTer can provide. There are many from that area of Italy or who have travelled there.

The Melody, built in 1982 as the Atlantic for the old Home Lines (later the Star/Ship Atlantic,) is 36,500 tons.. It was last refurbished in 1997 and is rated three stars plus by Berlitz.

Passenger capacity is 1076 (2 to a room) to 1600.

Hope this helps.

Re: 2 Questions

I just finished an indepth search for a Venice hotel. I'm spending the bulk of February there.

I used one travel site to preview hundreds of hotels. (w/ pic, maps, etc)

After directly emailing different properties from the webpage, I was pleased to find immediate responses with rate quotes well, well below the posted rates.

Email me if you'd like the web address and some recommendations.
