Small, friendly hotel near centre of Venice

This small hotel is located in the Castello area, in the north of Venice, a 12 min walk from St Mark's square.
I would recommend this hotel as you are staying in the real Venice: walking from the hotel to the main sights is spent going down many small streets and crossing several picturesque bridges.
It is about a 10 min walk from the Vaparetto stop Fondamente Nuove, which is the place where you catch the boats to the islands Burano, Murano and Torcello.
Beware, if you have a lot of luggage, there are 3 bridges to cross to get to the hotel, meaning a lot of steps.
Rooms were clean and of a good size. Breakfast was taken on a balcony outside.
The hotel was booked through www.venere.com and I booked it as it had very good reviews.

I'm afraid that Venice IS very expensive. You can find cheaper hotels in Mestre, on the mainland but within easy reach of La Serenissima.

Yes, Venice is very expensive, not only for accomodation but to eat and drink too. BUT it is worth it.

Hi
I stayed in a hotel called Alloggi Barbaria a couple of weeks ago. 12 mins walk from St Mark's Square and the Rialto Bridge - was in a quiet area, very clean place, air conditioning in the room. Was 120 euros per night, including breakfast. Don't know if this is what you would consider cheap, but I thought it was worth the money for a highly recommended hotel. I booked it through www.venere.com.

THERE IS A HOSTEL IN GIUDECCA ISLAND.

TAKE A VIEW TO THE LINK I THINK IT'S THE BEST WAY (I LIVE IN VENICE AND RECOMMEND YOU TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR MONEY!!!)

http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/articles/venice_hostel.htm

IF U GO TO THE GIUDECCA HOSTEL PAY ATTENTION FOR 2 THINGS:

1ST: IT CLOSES AT HALF PAST ELEVEN
2ND: YOU CAN'T LOSE THE LAST SHIP TO THE ISLAND OTHERWISE U MUST SLEEP IN S.MARK PLATZ OR SOMEWHERE ELSE IN VENEZIA

HAVE FUN
